Tonge is an outlying area of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England. The name is supposed to be derived from the Old English "tang" or "twang" meaning a fork in a river. Tonge comprises two areas, namely Tonge Fold and Tonge Moor. Tonge Fold sits upon the River Tonge, a region of whose banks are a geological site of special scientific interest (SSSI). Historically a part of Lancashire, it was once part of the township of Tonge with Haulgh. By the end of the 19th century Tonge was home to a coal mine. The River Tonge is a short river, splitting Bolton from contiguous Tonge, both in Greater Manchester, England. The Tonge is formed at the ''Meeting of the Waters'', where Astley Brook, from Smithills in the west, meets the Eagley Brook drawing on more sources to the north. The Tonge meanders southwards, to the east of Bolton, past Springfield where it is joined by Bradshaw Brook, at the end of its route from the Jumbles and Wayoh reservoirs, close to Tonge Fold. The Tonge joins the smaller and thus counterintuitively superseding Croal at Darcy Lever, shortly before the Croal's confluence with the River Irwell. Tonge Bridge section is a tract north of Tonge Bridge designated as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The site comprises the steep west right bank of the river. Tonge, Middleton
Tonge is a residential and industrial area of Middleton in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. It lies on the east side of Middleton between the town centre and its border with Chadderton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. Tonge was formerly a township in its own right, until the area was incorporated into the Municipal Borough of Middleton as part of local government reforms in the late 19th century. Its area includes localities such as Moorclose and part of the districts of Mills Hill and Middleton Junction. Tonge Hall was the manor house for the township. Tonge is a village near Sittingbourne in Kent, England. The hamlet is north of Bapchild (where at the 2011 Census the population was included), close to Murston Marshes beside the Swale. It is mainly farmland with one road (Church Road and Blacketts Road) passing through it towards Blacketts Farm. History In 1798, Edward Hasted records that it was once called 'Thwang' (a Saxon name). Vortigern, King of Saxon Britain, rewarded two Saxon chiefs Hengist and Horsa after his victory over the Scots and Picts. Breedon on the Hill is a village and civil parish about north of Ashby-de-la-Zouch in North West Leicestershire, England. The parish adjoins the Derbyshire county boundary and the village is only about south of the Derbyshire town of Melbourne. The 2001 Census recorded a parish population (including Isley and Wilson) of 958 people in 404 households. The parish includes the hamlets of Tonge east of the village and Wilson north of the village on the county boundary. Nieuwe-Tonge is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 13 km south of Hellevoetsluis. History The village was first mentioned in 1480 or 1481 as "Nova ecclesia in Grijsoert". The current name means "new headland". Nieuwe (new) has been added to distinguish from Oude-Tonge. Nieuwe-Tonge developed shortly after a dike was built around the Het Noordland ''polder'' in 1461. It used to have a harbour, but it was relocated to Battenoord in 1504. Oude-Tonge (also: ''Oudetonge'') is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 16 km south of Hellevoetsluis. History The village was first mentioned in 1420 or 1421 as "die Tonghe". The current name means "old headland". Oude (old) has been added to distinguish from Nieuwe-Tonge.
