Tomás Parra
Tomás Parrá (born 1937, Mexico City) is a Mexican artist, cultural promoter and museum curator. His work has been noted with membership into Mexico Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. Career Parrá began studying art at the Escuela de Iniciación Artística, studying under Carlos Alvarado Lang, then enrolling in Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" in 1951. In 1953, he began to work with artist Juan Soriano on stage sets and costumes for the Grupo de Teatro: Poesía en Voz Alta formed by Octavio Paz. This working relationship lasted for five years, during which time Soriano was experimenting with ceramic sculpture. Gallery owner Antonio Souza offered Parrá his first individual exhibit in 1958, which was then followed by exhibitions at the Proteo Gallery, popular in the 1960s and allowed Parra to meet other artists of the Generación de la Ruptura. Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli
The Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum is a museum and arts center in Mexico City, located in the San Pablo de Tepetlapa neighborhood of Coyoacán, 10 minutes by car from the Frida Kahlo Museum, as well as from the tourist neighborhood of this district. The Anahuacalli (from the Nahuatl word, whose meaning is "house surrounded by water"), is a temple of the arts designed by the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. This museum stands out for its extensive collection of pre-Columbian art, as well as for its Ecological Space that protects endemic flora and fauna. Rivera designed its architecture in order to safeguard his vast collection of pre-Hispanic pieces, while exhibiting the most beautiful works of this set in the museum’s main building. Surrealism
Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. Its aim was, according to leader André Breton, to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality", or ''surreality.'' It produced works of painting, writing, theatre, filmmaking, photography, and other media. Works of Surrealism feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and '' non sequitur''. Armando Morales
Armando Morales (January 15, 1927 – November 16, 2011) was an internationally renowned Nicaraguan painter. Morales is considered one of the most important painters of Nicaragua. Morales, who was born in Granada, Nicaragua, received many awards for his works. He received his first award at the Central American Painting Contest "15 de Septiembre" (September 15) which was held in Guatemala in 1956. He received the award for a painting which he named "Spook-Tree". That same painting was later bought by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The next year some of his paintings were featured at an exhibition called "Six Nicaraguan Artists" in Washington, he received excellent reviews and sold all his featured paintings. Roberto Matta
Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (; November 11, 1911 – November 23, 2002), better known as Roberto Matta, was one of Chile's best-known painters and a seminal figure in 20th century abstract expressionist and surrealist art. Biography Matta was of Spanish, Basque and French descent. Born in Santiago, he studied architecture and interior design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, and graduated in 1935. That spring, he journeyed from Peru to Panama and completed surreal drawings of many of the geographical features he witnessed. He first encountered Europe while serving in the Merchant Marine after graduating. His travels in Europe and the USA led him to meet artists such as Arshile Gorky, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, André Breton, and Le Corbusier. Rufino del Carmen Arellanes Tamayo (August 25, 1899 – June 24, 1991) was a Mexican painter of Zapotec heritage, born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico.Sullivan, 170-171Ades, 357 Tamayo was active in the mid-20th century in Mexico and New York, painting figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. Early life Tamayo was born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1899 to parents Manuel Arellanes and Florentina Tamayo. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a shoemaker. His mother died of tuberculosis in 1911. His Zapotec heritage is often cited as an early influence.
