Tomasz Motyka (born 31 December 1972) is a former footballer who played as a defender. He started his career playing in the youth sides of Lechia Gdańsk alongside his brother Grzegorz Motyka. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Lechia Gdańsk () is a Polish football club based in Gdańsk. The club was founded in 1945 by people expelled from Lwów, who were supporters of Poland's oldest football team Lechia Lwów, founded in 1903. The club's name comes from Lechia, a poetic name for Poland, and is a continuation of the name used by the club based in Lwów. In their early years, Lechia enjoyed some success, most notably finishing third in the Polish top division, before spending decades in the second and third tiers. In the early 1980s, Lechia won the Polish Cup, the Polish SuperCup, and played in a European competition for the first time. Grzegorz Motyka (footballer)
Grzegorz Motyka (born 31 January 1972) is a former footballer who played as a defender or midfielder. In a career which was mostly played in the top two divisions in Poland, he had spells with Hutnik Nowa Huta, Amica Wronki, and Dyskobolia Grodzisk Wielkopolski. His longest spell at a club was with Lechia Gdańsk, where also played in both of the Lechia Gdańsk merger teams Olimpia-Lechia Gdańsk and Lechia-Polonia Gdańsk. He made his first team debut against Widzew Łódź towards the end of the 1990–91 season. The Polish Cup in football ( pl, Puchar Polski w piłce nożnej ) is an elimination tournament for Polish football clubs, held continuously from 1950, and is the second most important national title in Polish football after the Ekstraklasa title. The Akademia Lechia Gdańsk (''Lechia Gdańsk Academy'') is Lechia Gdańsk's academy section of the football club. Lechia Gdańsk II also serve as the team's official 2nd team.
