''Neighbours'' is an Australian television soap opera. It was first broadcast on 18 March 1985. The following is a list of characters that appeared in the show in 2004, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by the shows executive producer Ric Pellizzeri. The 20th season of ''Neighbours'' began airing from 19 January 2004. Svetlanka Ristic the mother of Liljana Bishop made her debut in February, and her grandson, Luka Dokich arrived later on in September. Ben Barrack also joined the cast as Gus Cleary in February and the following month saw a new police officer arrive in the form of Allan Steiger. The first two members of the Timmins family, Stingray and Janelle, arrived in March and November respectively. Joe Scully's brother Tom made his first appearance in May. ''Neighbours'' is an Australian television soap opera, which has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap '' Sons and Daughters.'' Although successful in Melbourne, ''Neighbours'' underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. Alan Fletcher (born 30 March 1957) is an Australian actor of stage, television and film and musician. Fletcher is best known for TV soap opera ''Neighbours'', as Karl Kennedy. His on-screen wife is played by Jackie Woodburne, who coincidentally had previously played his sister in TV procedural drama ''Cop Shop''. Having appeared in the series since 1994, Fletcher is the third longest serving actor in an Australian television serial, after ''Home and Away'' actors Ray Meagher and Lynne McGranger. Karl Kennedy is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'', played by Alan Fletcher. The actor previously appeared in the soap in 1987 as mechanic Greg Cooper. He made his first screen appearance as Karl during the episode broadcast on 20 September 1994. Ian Smith (born 19 June 1938) is an Australian actor, television producer and screenwriter. Smith appeared in roles for Crawford Productions, before working as a producer, screenwriter and actor on the cult series ''Prisoner'' and the soap opera ''Neighbours'' as Harold Bishop from 1987 when the series was taken over by Network Ten until 1991.
