Tom Malchow
Thomas Andrew Malchow (born August 18, 1976) is a retired American competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder. Malchow represented the United States in three consecutive Summer Olympics. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he received a silver medal for his second-place performance in the men's 200-meter butterfly. Four years later at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, he won the gold medal in the men's 200-meter butterfly. He also set a new world record in the 200-meter butterfly in 2000. Malchow was also a captain of the U.S. Men's Swimming Team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He attended high school in Minnesota at Saint Thomas Academy, graduated from the University of Michigan and was a member of the United States Swimming (USS) Team 'Star'. Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water (e.g., in a sea or lake). Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. A medley relay consists of four swimmers who will each swim a different stroke, ordered as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Swimming each stroke requires a set of specific techniques; in competition, there are distinct regulations concerning the acceptable form for each individual stroke.
