Thomas Clayton
Thomas Clayton (July 1777 – August 21, 1854) was an American lawyer and politician from Dover in Kent County, Delaware. He was a member of the Federalist Party and later the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. He served in the Delaware General Assembly, as Attorney General of Delaware, as Secretary of State of Delaware, as Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court, as U.S. Representative from Delaware, and as U.S. Senator from Delaware. In 1846 he was one of two members of the United States Senate to vote against declaring war on Mexico. Early life and family Clayton was born at Massey in Kent County, Maryland, son of the former Governor of Delaware, Dr. Joshua Clayton, and Rachael McCleary Clayton. Thomas Clayton (composer)
Thomas Clayton (16731725) was an English violinist and composer, and a member of The King's Musick at the court of William III. His is said to be the first to acclimatise legitimate opera in England. Life His father was William Clayton. He studied in Italy, from about 1702 to about 1704, bringing with him (as was said at the time) a considerable quantity of Italian songs which he had collected abroad. These he set to an adaptation by Peter Anthony Motteux of a drama by Stonzani, which had been performed at Bologna in 1677, and at Venice in 1678. In association with Nicola Haym and Charles Dieupart, Clayton entered upon a series of opera performances at Drury Lane Theatre — the first venture of the kind in the annals of the English stage. The first season began on Tuesday, 16 Jan. 1705, with ''Arsinoe, Queen of Cyprus'', the work which Clayton had vamped up from his Italian gleanings. Thomas Clayton (physician)
Sir Thomas Clayton (c 1612 – 4 October 1693), known in his father's lifetime as Thomas Clayton the Younger, was an English physician and professor of medicine who sat in the House of Commons in 1660. Clayton was the son of Thomas Clayton MD of Oxford, the last Principal of Broadgates Hall and the first Master of Pembroke College. He matriculated there on 25 May 1627, aged fifteen, and was graduated BA on 22 January 1629, MA on 17 October 1631. He was of Gray's Inn in 1633. Further awards from Oxford were B.Med. on 18 July 1635 and D.Med. on 19 June 1639. He was Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1647 to 1665, succeeding his father. In 1660, Clayton was elected one of the two Members of Parliament for Oxford University in the Convention Parliament. He was knighted on 27 March 1661. Thomas Clayton (born April 26, 1984) is a former American football running back. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He last played college football at Kansas State. He has also been a member of the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. Thomas Clayton (1 December 1882 – 24 March 1909) was an Australian jockey of the early 20th century. Early life Clayton was born in St Leonards, New South Wales, a Sydney harbourside suburb on the north shore, to James Clayton and Alice (''née'' Russell). Career He was indentured to famous Randwick trainer Isaac Earnshaw and rode for him some of the best horses of the time. He was best known for his association with the champion Poseidon and accumulated an impressive record of major wins with this horse. Thanks to Poseidon, Clayton became the first jockey to win the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in 1906.
