Todd Birr
Todd Birr (born April 20, 1968) is an American curler. He was a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Men's Curling Championship. Career Birr skipped his team to victory at the 2007 United States Curling Men's Championships, beating out teams such as Olympic bronze medalist Pete Fenson and former national champion Jason Larway in the process. He had relative success in prior nationals finishing fourth in 2006 and as a semi-finalist in 2004. His victory qualified his team of Bill Todhunter, Greg Johnson and Kevin Birr to a berth at the 2007 Ford World Men's Curling Championship representing team USA. There, Birr's was the only team to defeat Glenn Howard's Canadian team in the round robin when Howard wrecked on his last rock, and Birr bumped out a Canadian stone to score three giving him a victory. The 2007 Continental Cup of Curling was held at the Medicine Hat Arena in Medicine Hat, Alberta on December 13-16. North America won its third title, defeating Team Europe 290-110. Format The Continental Cup involves four disciplines within the sport, each worth a designated number of points - Team Games (72 points), Mixed Doubles (36 points), Singles (32 points) and Skins Games (260 points). The first side to score 201 points is declared the winner. Each member of the winning side receives $2,000, while the losing side members get $1,400 each from the $88,400 total purse. The revised Mixed Doubles format involved only two players per team, instead of the previous four (two throwers and two sweepers), who also become sweepers during the eight-end games. Paul Pustovar (born December 17, 1951 in Chisholm, Minnesota) is an American curler from Hibbing, Minnesota. He is one of the most prolific curlers from the United States, with over thirty years of experience. He has earned two bronze medals at the World Curling Championships and has earned five gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal in the twenty-five national championships that he has participated in. This is a glossary of terms in curling. #s During a game, sweepers might call out numbers. These numbers indicate how far the sweepers think the rock in play will travel. This system is relatively new to the game and is often attributed to the Randy Ferbey rink since they were the first major team to use the system, but it is not known whose idea it originally was. 1 to 3 indicates a rock in the free guard zone, 4 to 6 the rings in front of the tee line, 7 being on the button, and 8 to 10 the rings behind the tee line. 2009 USA-Brazil Challenge
The 2009 USA-Brazil Challenge was a curling challenge held from January 30 to February 1, 2009 at the Bismarck Capital Curling Club in Bismarck, North Dakota. This was the first Americas Challenge. The challenge featured the Brazilian national men's curling team against an American team in a best-of-five series. The winner would get to represent the second team from the Americas at the 2009 Ford World Men's Curling Championship. Canada automatically qualifies as both hosts and defending champions. Until 2009, the United States (and Canada) have always automatically qualified on account of no other country in the Americas fielding curling teams. However, in 2008 the Brazilian Ice Sports Federation felt that their men's curling team had a high enough calibre that they were ready to face off with the Americans.
