Tobias Arlt
Tobias Arlt (born 2 June 1987) is a German luger who has competed since 1991, acting as a backdriver. He won a silver medal in the men's doubles event at the 2008 FIL World Luge Championships, a silver and a bronze at the 2010 FIL European Luge Championships, a gold medal at the FIL World Luge Championships 2013, and two gold medals at his debut Olympics, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Biography Tobias Arlt was born on 2 June 1987 in Berchtesgaden, West Germany. He began luging at the age of four, beginning to compete in 1991; his national debut was in 2006. Arlt is a backdriver in luging, and his partner for doubles is Tobias Wendl. As a team, they have several nicknames, including "The Bayern-Express" and "The Two Tobis". At the 2008 FIL World Luge Championship in Oberhof, Germany, in the men's doubles, Arlt won a silver medal. German Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton Federation (german: Bob- und Schlittenverband für Deutschland e.V., BSD) is the official federation for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton in Germany. It is the German representative both to the International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation and the International Luge Federation and is part of the German Olympic Committee. Until German reunification in 1990, East Germany operated its own governing body for bobsleigh and luge sports, the Deutscher Schlitten- und Bobsportverband. BSD is headquartered in Berchtesgaden. FIL World Luge Championships 2008
The FIL World Luge Championships 2008 took place January 21-27, 2008 at the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track in Oberhof, Germany for the third time after having hosted the event in 1973 and 1985. The relay competition took the place of the team event that had been held at every world championship since 1989. This event had all of teams start at the same part of the track (located at the women's singles/ men's doubles start house), then run down to the finish and tap on a relay marker to exchange from one slider on a team to the next (men's doubles to women's singles to men's singles) with the fastest time winning. Event preparations In an effort to prepare for the championships, the track underwent a major renovation in 2006, costing €4 million. Ticket sales at the finish area for all three days were sold out. The 2021 50th FIL World Luge Championships were held from 29 to 31 January 2021 in Königssee, Germany. They were originally awarded to Calgary and Vancouver, Canada, but were moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Russia doping ban On 9 December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia from all international sport for a period of four years, after the Russian government was found to have tampered with laboratory data that it provided to WADA in January 2019 as a condition of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency being reinstated. As a result of the ban, WADA plans to allow individually cleared Russian athletes to take part in the 2021-2022 World Championships and 2022 Summer Olympics under a neutral banner, as instigated at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but they will not be permitted to compete in team sports.
