The area around present-day Pensacola was inhabited by Native American peoples thousands of years before the historical era. The historical era begins with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Andrés de Pez y Malzarraga (1657 - May 7, 1723) was a Spanish Naval commander and founder of Pensacola, Florida. Life and career Andrés de Pez was born in Cádiz in 1657 into a naval tradition. Santa Elena, a Spanish settlement on what is now Parris Island, South Carolina, was the capital of Spanish Florida from 1566 to 1587. It was established under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the first governor of Spanish Florida.
