Timber Rock Railroad
The Timber Rock Railroad (TIBR) is a shortline rail carrier operating in the states of Texas and Louisiana. Its single line runs from Kirbyville, Texas to DeRidder, Louisiana, about 41.5 miles. It is owned by the Watco Companies. History The TIBR began operations in 1998 when Watco leased the Kirbyville to DeRidder line from what is now the BNSF Railway. This line had been completed in 1906 by the Jasper and Eastern Railroad, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. Watco later leased other lines from BNSF, including Kirbyville to Tenaha, Texas in 2002, Kirbyville to Silsbee, Texas in February 2004, and Somerville, Texas to Silsbee in July 2004. At that point, the line was operating across about 290 miles of track. But thereafter, the line began discontinuing service on various segments. Tenaha, Texas
Tenaha is a town in Shelby County, Texas, United States. The population was 989 at the 2020 census. History Tenaha was established on February 2, 1886. The community was named by members of the Hicks family (Cherokee) for Tenehaw Municipality, from the Spanish, the original name of Shelby County. In 2009, Tenaha became a defendant in a class action lawsuit over allegations that local police regularly made improper seizures of cash, jewelry, and property from African-American and Latino motorists passing through the town. Arrested drivers were given a choice of either going to jail on money-laundering felony charges or handing over all their valuables in order to be allowed to walk free. In one case a couple surrendered $6,000 to keep their children out of child protection services. Historical development Established in 1905, the town was a stop on the ''Jasper and Eastern Railroad'' which was primarily a line servicing the lumber industry. The town's name was derived from the last name of two key men who were associated with the Kirby Lumber Company, owned by John Henry Kirby. B. F. Bonner was the sawmill manager, and Robert Withrow Wier was the town surgeon. The town was established to take advantage of the timber of the region as part of the company expansion. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876.
