Tim Murphy (American Politician)
Timothy Francis Murphy (born September 11, 1952) is an American former politician and psychologist who served as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district from 2003 until his resignation in 2017. The district included several suburbs south of Pittsburgh. A member of the Republican Party, he also represented the 37th Senate district in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1996 to 2003. Murphy consistently carried the 18th district with at least 58% of the vote, including unopposed re-election bids in 2014 and 2016. In October 2017, it was reported Murphy urged a mistress to have an abortion, despite his strict public anti-abortion stance. This was followed by reports of endemic abuse and harassment in his congressional office. Murphy resigned immediately following these scandals, with his seat claimed by Democrat Conor Lamb in a special election. Timothy John Murphy (born August 7, 1959) is a former Canadian politician and was the chief of staff of the Prime Minister's Office under Paul Martin's government. He is currently CEO of McMillan LLP. Background Tim Murphy was born in Barrie, Ontario. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen's University in 1982 and a law degree from the University of Toronto. Timothy John Murphy (22 July 1878 – 1 January 1902) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was appointed as a police constable in April 1901 and played one game for St Kilda before being posted to Mildura. Timothy Lester Murphy (born October 9, 1956) is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Harvard University, a position he has held since 1994. Murphy served as the head coach at the University of Maine from 1987 to 1988 and the University of Cincinnati from 1989 to 1993. Career Under Murphy, the Harvard Crimson football program had enjoyed 16 consecutive winning seasons, from 2001 to 2016. His 2004 Harvard Crimson football team went 10–0 and was the only undefeated team during the 2004 NCAA Division I-AA football season. His 2014 Harvard team repeated the feat, again going 10–0 and achieving the only perfect mark during the 2014 NCAA Division I FCS football season. Timothy Murphy (1751–1818) was an Irish American rifleman in the American Revolutionary War. At the Battle of Bemis Heights (Second Battle of Saratoga) on October 7, 1777, Murphy is reputed to have shot and killed Sir Francis Clerke, 7th Baronet and General Simon Fraser. Murphy's life is the subject of John Brick's 1953 novel, ''The Rifleman''. Early life Relatively few details of Murphy's early life are known. He was born in the year 1751 near the Delaware Water Gap. Timothy Iver Murphy (January 10, 1951 – June 30, 2018) was an American poet and businessman. Reviewing Timothy Murphy's second collection in ''Contemporary Poetry Review'' in 2002, Paul Lake observed that "What Virgil was to the Italian peninsula and Homer to the Greek Mediterranean, Murphy is to the swatch of plains stretching from the Upper Midwest to the Rockies like a grassy inland sea." Life Murphy was the son of Vincent and Katherine Bye Murphy. He was raised in Moorhead, Minnesota. Murphy was admitted to Yale University as an undergraduate. He was mentored there by Robert Penn Warren, the renowned poet and novelist. In 1972, he graduated with a B.A. degree and was designated Scholar of the House in Poetry. Timothy Patrick Murphy (November 3, 1959 – December 6, 1988) was an American actor, perhaps best known for his role as Mickey Trotter on the popular CBS prime time soap opera ''Dallas'' from 1982–83. Career Murphy started his acting career as an adolescent in several television commercials and from there he went on to act in the 1978 miniseries ''Centennial''.
