Tift County, Georgia
Tift County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,118. The county seat is Tifton. Tift County comprises the Tifton, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was created on August 17, 1905, and is named for Henry Harding Tift, who founded Tifton in 1872. Tift purchased about 65,000 acres of virgin pine timberland there in the Wiregrass Region of South Georgia, and established a sawmill and a village for his workers. Tift eventually expanded into turpentine and barrel-making operations, and turned his barren timberlands into farms for cotton, corn, livestock, fruit, tobacco, pecans and sweet potatoes. When the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway intersected the Brunswick and Western Railroad near Tift's mill in 1888, the settlement was connected to Atlanta and became a boom town. Andrew Tift (born 1968) is a British realist portraitist. Early life Andrew Tift was born in 1968 in Walsall, England. He was educated at the Stafford College of Art. He then graduated from the University of Central England. Career He is a realist portraitist. In 1998, he did a portrait of Tony Benn, a Labour Member of Parliament from 1950 to 2001. He also did a portrait of Glenys Kinnock, Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead, who served as a Labour Member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2009. Asa Tift
Asa Tift (died 1889) was the most notable salvager in Key West, Florida in the early 19th century. He owned a large salvaging operation, parts of which can still be seen as the Key West Shipwreck Historeum Museum (where tourists are shown around by an actor portraying Asa Tift). Nelson Tift
Nelson Tift (July 23, 1810 – November 21, 1891) was an American jurist, businessman, sailor, and politician who is best known for founding the city of Albany, Georgia. Biography Tift was born in Groton, Connecticut. Early in his life he became a devout Episcopal. He moved with his family to Key West, Florida in the 1820s, where he assisted his father in a mercantile business, and then to Augusta, Georgia in 1830, where he was also in business. During his travels, he opened many side businesses and ventures. He arrived in what would later be called Albany and set up a small trading post. On July 5, 1840, he was elected to the Baker County, Georgia Inferior Court and was re-elected to that post in January 1841. In 1840, he owned 11 slaves. Tift was married and had at least one daughter, Fannie, who was married to Confederate War Captain Thomas N. Nelson; he fought in the war and died at Tupelo, Mississippi in 1864. Raymond Frank Tift (June 21, 1884 – March 29, 1945) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball with the New York Highlanders in . Biography A native of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Tift graduated from Brown University in 1907. While at Brown, he was a star baseball player who reportedly "showed great nerve in tight places and fielded his position with the greatest accuracy." Tift signed with the New York Highlanders after graduation, and appeared in four games during New York's 1907 season. With the Highlanders, Tift played with Baseball Hall of Famers Jack Chesbro, Willie Keeler, and Branch Rickey. Tift's major league debut came on August 7, when he pitched six innings in relief of Slow Joe Doyle, allowing five hits and one run in New York's 8-4 loss to the St. Louis Browns at Hilltop Park. Tift County High School is a public high school located in Tifton, Georgia, United States. It serves grades 9-12 in the Tift County School District. The school mascot is the Blue Devil. In 2018, the Tift County School District was ranked the 15th safest in Georgia. TCHS football TCHS plays in the GHSA class 1-AAAAAAA at Brodie Field. Tift College was a private liberal arts women's college located in Forsyth, Georgia. Founded in 1849, the college ceased operations in 1987, after being merged with Mercer University in nearby Macon, Georgia. The campus facilities have been adapted for use as the headquarters of the Georgia Department of Corrections. The facility is known as State Offices South at Tift College (SOSTC). The campus is 20 miles north of Macon. History Tift College was founded in 1849 as the Forsyth Female Collegiate Institute. It was renamed Monroe College in 1857 and as Bessie Tift College in 1907 in honor of an alumna. In 1898, it became affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention.
