Tiengemeten
Tiengemeten is an island in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard and lies about south of Spijkenisse. Before 1984 the island was administratively split between Goudswaard and Zuid-Beijerland, and until 2019 it was part of the municipality of Korendijk. The name ''Tiengemeten'' refers to an ancient area measurement; one ''gemet'' is comparable with one acre so the name means ''ten-acre island''. Ten ''gemet''s would be about , while the island is actually about long and wide. Hoeksche Waard (municipality)
Hoeksche Waard () is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, consisting of the eponymous Hoeksche Waard and Tiengemeten islands. The municipality was formed on 1 January 2019 by the merger of the municipalities Binnenmaas, Cromstrijen, Korendijk, Oud-Beijerland, and Strijen. Korendijk
Korendijk () was a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covered an area of of which was water. With the municipal reorganization of the Hoeksche Waard on 1 January 1984, the municipality of Korendijk was formed out of the former municipalities of Goudswaard, Nieuw-Beijerland, Piershil (location of town hall), Zuid-Beijerland, and the island Tiengemeten. In addition to these villages, it also had the population centres Nieuwendijk and Zuidzijde. On 1 January 2019, it merged into the municipality of Hoeksche Waard. Hoeksche Waard
The Hoekse Waard (; pre-1947 spelling: Hoeksche Waard) is an island between the Oude Maas, Dordtsche Kil, Hollands Diep, Haringvliet and Spui rivers in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. The island, part of the namesake municipality of Hoeksche Waard, is a mostly agricultural region, south of the outskirts of Rotterdam. The Hoeksche Waard consists of reclaimed land (polders): after the Saint Elisabeth flood of 1421 most of the area was flooded. The land has been reclaimed gradually in the following centuries. Rien Poortvliet
Rien Poortvliet (; 7 August 1932 – 15 September 1995) was a Dutch artist and illustrator. Born in Schiedam, Poortvliet was best known for his drawings of animals and for "Gnomes", a famous series of illustrated books with text by Wil Huygen. Poortvliet did not attend art school and his family discouraged him from becoming an artist: `My family thought that artists were, you know, a little bit dangerous, all those naked women, all that drinking all night." Instead, Poortvliet's father wanted him pursue a profession that would produce a stable income, so Poortvliet began a career in advertising, initially drawing scenes of families for soap companies. Poortvliet took more pleasure in the work he did on the side for several publishers. He illustrated various books, among them works by Jaap ter Haar, and Godfried Bomans. Spijkenisse
Spijkenisse () is a city in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Following an administrative reform in 2015, it is part of the municipality of Nissewaard, and has a population of 72,500. It covers an area of of which is water. It is part of the Greater Rotterdam area. History Archaeological evidence suggests that the area around Spijkenisse has been inhabited for several thousand years. The area's prehistoric inhabitants depended on fishing in the Maas and hunting in the surrounding swamps for sustenance. Spijkenisse also has an anthem, the song is called "Spijkenisse" by Rik Hoogendoorn. The song was released in 2012 and is very popular amongst people who live in Spijkenisse. The oldest known reference to the name ''Spickenisse'' is in a source from 1231. Spijkenisse is a portmanteau of the words ' ( spit) and ''nesse'' (nose) meaning "pointy nose." Zuid-Beijerland
Zuid-Beijerland is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard, and lies about 10 km south of Spijkenisse. The village was originally called Den Hitsert. The current name was first used between 1839 and 1859. It is named after the eponymous polder. Goudswaard
Goudswaard is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland, located on the westernmost tip of the Hoeksche Waard, approximately 6 km south-west of Spijkenisse. Goudswaard was a separate municipality from 1817 until 1984, when it was merged with Nieuw-Beijerland, Zuid-Beijerland and Piershil to form the municipality of Korendijk. History The village was first mentioned in 1246 as "terram que Corendich dicitur". In 1439, the polder Oud Korendijk was created, however a settlement already existed outside the dike.
