Thorney Rugby Club is a Rugby union club based near Peterborough which was formed in 1990. Ron Jacobs Playing Field The club's ground is named after former RFU Chairman and England International Ron Jacobs who lived in Thorney in his later years. The ground has 3 pitches of which one is floodlit. Teams There are currently 5 teams that play at the Ron Jacobs. These are Thorney Seniors, Thorney Seconds, Thorney Vets, Thorney U17 and Thorney Minis. Thorney currently play in Midlands League 6 Eastern Division South Section. New Facilities Grant Thorney RUFC have secured funding worth more than £128,000 from the Rugby Football Foundation to build new changing rooms at their Ron Jacobs Playing Fields ground near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. Thorney, Cambridgeshire
Thorney is a village in the City of Peterborough, Peterborough unitary authority in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire, England. Located around eight miles (13 km) east of Peterborough city centre, on the A47 road, A47. Historically in the Isle of Ely, Thorney was transferred to the short-lived county of Huntingdon and Peterborough in 1965 and became part of the Peterborough district in 1974, on the merger into Cambridgeshire; the city became a unitary authority area in 1998. History Thorney began as a Saxon settlement in about 500 AD. The East Midlands Rugby Football Union (EMRFU) is a governing body for rugby union in part of The Midlands, England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union for the counties of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and the Huntingdonshire and Peterborough districts of Cambridgeshire and administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in those areas. Midlands 4 East (South)
Midlands 4 East (South) is a level 9 English Rugby Union league and level 4 of the Midlands League, made up of teams from the southern part of the East Midlands region including clubs from Bedfordshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and occasionally Cambridgeshire, all of whom play home and away matches throughout the season. Each year some of the clubs in this division also take part in the RFU Junior Vase - a level 9-12 national competition. Formed for the 2006-07 season, the division was originally known as Midlands 5 East (South) but changed to its present name for the 2008-09 season due to league restructuring. Ron Jacobs (rugby Player)
Charles Ronald Jacobs (28 October 1928 – 10 November 2002) was an English Rugby Union player. He played at prop for Northampton and . He went to Oakham School in Rutland, where he captained the first XV in 1945. He studied agriculture at the University of Nottingham. Jacobs played a club record 470 games for Northampton over a 17-year period and appeared 29 times for England - captaining them for his final two games in 1964.
