Thorah Township
Thorah Township is a former municipality that today is a geographic township in the municipality of Brock, Regional Municipality of Durham in Central Ontario, Canada. History The township was established as part of York County in . The origin of the name is unclear; it may have been named for the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, known to those in the Jewish faith as the Torah. The Township was incorporated in 1850 and transferred to Ontario County upon its formation in 1852. The Village of Beaverton, originally part of the township, was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1884. Part of the Trent–Severn Waterway was constructed through the northern portion of the Township and opened in 1907. With the creation of Durham Region in 1974, Thorah was amalgamated with then-Brock Township and the Villages of Beaverton and Cannington to create an expanded Township of Brock. Cannington, Ontario
Cannington is a community in Brock Township, Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. The town is on the Beaver River. History Originally part of the original Brock Township, (historic map) Cannington was first settled in 1833. It was first known as McCaskill's Mills after a local mill-owning family. In 1849, a post office was opened, at which point the settlement was renamed Cannington after former British foreign secretary and Prime Minister George Canning (1770–1827). Cannington separated from Brock Township in 1878 when it was incorporated as a Village. When Durham Region was created in 1974, Cannington was amalgamated with the original Brock Township, Thorah Township and the Village of Beaverton to create the newly expanded Township of Brock. Trent–Severn Waterway
The Trent–Severn Waterway is a canal route connecting Lake Ontario at Trenton to Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, at Port Severn. Its major natural waterways include the Trent River, Otonabee River, Kawartha Lakes, Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and Severn River. Its scenic, meandering route has been called "one of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world". The canal was surveyed as a military route, but the first lock was built in 1833 as a commercial venture. This connected a number of lakes and rivers near the centre of the waterway, opening a large area to navigation by steamship. The government had begun construction of three additional locks when the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 broke out. This led the government to re-examine the project, concluding that the route would have too many locks to allow rapid movement for military purposes. Beaverton, Ontario
Beaverton is a community in Brock Township in the Regional Municipality of Durham, Ontario, Canada. History Beaverton was first settled in 1822. The settlement is located on Lake Simcoe at the mouth of the Beaver River. It was called Calder's Mills (after an early miller Duncan Miller and Alexander Calder), Mill Town and Milton until it was renamed Beaverton when the post office was opened in 1835. By 1869, Beaverton was a village with a population of 700 in the Township of Thorah Township in Ontario County. It was the terminus of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway in 1858. The steamer Emily May plied daily between Beaverton and Bell Ewart station of the Northern Railroad. There were stages daily to Whitby and Oshawa. Ontario County was the name of two historic counties in the Canadian province of Ontario. Ontario County (1792–1800) The original Ontario County, located in the Midland District, was constituted in 1792 as an electoral district for the new Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada: In 1798, the Parliament of Upper Canada dissolved the county, and redistributed its territory to the following electoral counties and townships, effective at the beginning of 1800: Ontario County (1852–1973) On January 1, 1852 the old County of York was divided into three counties (York, Ontario and Peel); however they remained united. Brock, Ontario
Brock is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham, Ontario, Canada. Brock Township is also a former municipality and geographic township prior to the amalgamation that formed the current municipality. The Trent–Severn Waterway forms part of the northern border of the municipality, which enters Lake Simcoe through Ramara Township. There are five locks in Brock. Thorah Island in Lake Simcoe is within the municipal boundaries of Brock. History The original Brock Township was surveyed in 1817 as part of York County and the first meetings were held in 1833.
