Thor is a town in Norway Township, Humboldt County, Iowa, United States. The population was 181 at the time of the 2020 census. History The town of Thor is a farming community which was originally built up chiefly by Scandinavian immigrants. Settlement of the township started in 1869 with the filing of a claim by Ole Willicksen, who was a native of Stavanger, Norway. In 1881, the town of Thor was laid out by the Western Town Lot Company. Thor was platted in 1882. It was named after the mythical deity Thor in Old Norse mythology. Thor was formerly serviced by Iowa Highway 302, which was decommissioned in 1980. Woolstock is a city in Wright County, Iowa, United States. The population was 144 at the time of the 2020 census. History Woolstock township was established in 1858, and its first Post Office for Woolstock was in 1868, located near the location of the Historic French Church, about 3 miles east of the town's location today. Woolstock was relocated when platted by the Western Town Lot Company in 1881, that relocated many rural communities towards newly laid railroad lines . Eagle Grove is a city in Wright County, Iowa, United States. The population was 3,601 at the time of the 2020 census. Eagle Grove is the largest city in Wright County. History Eagle Grove was platted in 1881. It was named from the eagle nests seen by early settlers in a nearby Oak tree grove perched above the bank of the Boone River . In 1851 Mr. N. B. Paine moved to Wright County, purchased property and constructed a log cabin that stood directly west of the grove. The nest was over six feet in diameter. Eagle Grove Community School District
The Eagle Grove Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Eagle Grove, Iowa. The district covers area of Wright, Humboldt, and Webster counties. and serves Eagle Grove, Thor, Vincent, Woolstock, and the surrounding rural areas. Jess Toliver has been the superintendent since 2009. On December 26, 2018, his home was destroyed by a fire. The family was home, but managed to escape the fire. During a broadcast of a high school basketball game between Eagle Grove and Forest City on November 28, 2017, two employees were recorded making racist comments regarding some Eagle Grove players who they perceived to be "Español people", saying they were foreigners who should "go back where they came from."
