Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Ardy Bernardus Wiranata (born 10 February 1970) is an Indonesian former badminton player who rated among the top singles players in the world (several of whom were fellow Indonesians) during most of the 1990s. Career Quick, supple, and powerful, he won numerous international events and arguably had the best overall record of any player in the first half of the decade. Born in Jakarta, Wiranata trained at the PB Djarum. His achievements began when won the invitation World Junior Championships in 1987 in the boys' singles and mixed doubles event partnered with Susi Susanti. Afterwards, he managed to competing in the senior tournament, by become the runner-up at the 1989 IBF World Championships. Badminton had its debut as an official medal sport at the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was held from 28 July to 4 August 1992. Four events were held in the first competition of the sport: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, and women's doubles. Badminton was contested in the Pavelló de la Mar Bella. 36 nations entered competitors, with a total of 177 entrants. Asian nations won fifteen of the sixteen medals, with their dominance being broken only by Denmark's bronze medal in the men's singles. The tournament was single-elimination.
