Thomas Steiner (politician)
Thomas Steiner (born 27 January 1967) is an Austrian politician of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). He has served as Mayor of Eisenstadt, the capital of the state of Burgenland, since 2011. He was chairman of the state ÖVP branch from 2015 to 2020, and was the party's lead candidate in the 2020 state election. Personal life Steiner is the son of primary school director Matthias Steiner and his wife Magdalena ( née Karner). He grew up with five siblings in Podersdorf and Loretto, where he attended elementary school, before moving to Eisenstadt. He attended the Bundesrealgymnasium there and passed his ''Matura'' in 1985. Steiner then studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna (Juridicum Vienna) and graduated in 1991. After completing his studies, he did his military service in the Austrian Armed Forces. Eisenstadt (; hu, Kismarton; hr, Željezni grad; ; sl, Železno, Bavarian language, Austro-Bavarian: ''Eisnstod'') is a city in Austria, the state capital of Burgenland. It had a recorded population on 29 April 2021 of 15,074. In the Habsburg monarchy, Habsburg Empire's Kingdom of Hungary, Kismarton (Eisenstadt) was the seat of the House of Esterházy, Eszterházy Hungarian nobility, Hungarian noble family. 2010 Burgenland State Election
The 2010 Burgenland state election was held on 30 May 2010 to elect the members of the 20th Landtag of Burgenland. The governing Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) narrowly lost its majority, while the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and List Burgenland (LBL) made gains. Governor Hans Niessl was returned for a third term. Background Prior to amendments made in 2014, the Burgenland constitution mandated that cabinet positions in the state government (state councillors, german: Landesräten) be allocated between parties proportionally in accordance with the share of votes won by each; this is known as Proporz. Sebastian Kurz (; born 27 August 1986) is a former Austrian politician who twice served as chancellor of Austria, initially from December 2017 to May 2019 and then a second time from January 2020 to October 2021. 2015 Burgenland State Election
The 2015 Burgenland state election was held on 31 May 2015 to elect the members of the 21st Landtag of Burgenland. The two major parties, the governing Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), both lost votes. The three minor parties made gains and each doubled their representation in the Landtag. With the SPÖ falling substantially short of a majority, they required a coalition partner to govern. They subsequently formed a coalition with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), violating the party's federal directive not to work with FPÖ in government.
