Thomas R. Jernigan
Thomas Roberts Jernigan (1847–1920) was US consul (representative), consul in Kobe, Japan (1885–1889), and later Consulate General of the United States, Shanghai, US consul general in Shanghai, China (1893–1897). After leaving the diplomatic service he was Standard Oil Company's attorney in China, and served as chairman of the Shanghai International Settlement. From 1905, he went into private practice as a lawyer with Stirling Fessenden under the firm name Jernigan and Fessenden. Jernigan Road (now, Xianxia Road (仙霞路)) in Shanghai was named after him. He wrote a number of works on Chinese economics. Jernigan died in 1920 and was buried on a hill overlooking Nanjing. He is remembered on a plaque in Raleigh, North Carolina (corner of W Cabarrus and S McDowell on the north west side of the Raleigh Convention Centre.) The Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai is one of the six American diplomatic and consular posts in the People's Republic of China. First established in 1844 following the signing of the Treaty of Wanghia, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai had a presence until the conclusion of the Chinese Communist Revolution and it closed in 1950. It reopened in 1980 at its present location at 1469 Huai Hai Zhong Road (at the corner with Urumqi Road) in an early 20th-century mansion. The Consulate General has two other offices in Shanghai. The term ''China Hand'' originally referred to 19th-century merchants in the treaty ports of China, but came to be used for anyone with expert knowledge of the language, culture, and people of China. The ''North American Review'' (NAR) was the first literary magazine in the United States. It was founded in Boston in 1815 by journalist Nathan Hale and others. It was published continuously until 1940, after which it was inactive until revived at Cornell College in Iowa under Robert Dana in 1964. Since 1968, the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been home to the publication. Nineteenth-century archives are freely available via Cornell University's Making of America.
