Thomas Henderson (Liberal Politician)
Sir Thomas Henderson (15 July 1874 – 3 May 1951) was a Scottish Liberal Party politician and businessman. Background He was the son of James Henderson JP of Hawick. He was educated at Hawick and at Blairlodge Academy, Stirlingshire. He married, in 1900, Helen Scott Thyne. They had two sons and one daughter. Professional career He was Director of the firm of Messrs. Innes, Henderson and Co, Ltd., hosiery manufacturers of Hawick. He was President of the South of Scotland Chamber of Commerce. Political career He was a Justice of the peace for Roxburghshire, a member of the Licensing Appeal Court, and of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A., and for several years he was a member of Hawick Town Council. He was National Liberal Party (UK) Member of Parliament for Roxburgh and Selkirk from 1922 to 1923. Early life and education Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott was born on 30 December 1894 the son of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Margaret Alice "Molly" Bridgeman. His sister, Alice, married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (one of the paternal uncles of Queen Elizabeth II) in 1935, becoming a member of the British Royal Family. Montagu Douglas Scott was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and had a military career commanding the 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was also Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers. Robert Munro, 1st Baron Alness, (28 May 1868 – 6 October 1955), was a Scottish lawyer, judge and Liberal politician. He served as Secretary for Scotland between 1916 and 1922 in David Lloyd George's coalition government and as Lord Justice Clerk between 1922 and 1933. Background and education Munro was born in Alness, Ross-shire, the son of Margaret (née Sinclair), daughter of Reverend John Sinclair, and Reverend Alexender Ross Munro. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Edinburgh. Legal and political career Munro was admitted to the Scottish Bar as an Advocate in 1893. George Dallas (Labour Politician)
George Dallas (6 August 1878 – 4 January 1961) was a British Labour Party politician. Life and career Born in Glasgow, Dallas worked as a coal miner in his youth. He joined the Socialist League in about 1894 before moving to London to work for a coal merchant. Returning to Glasgow, he participated in the trade union movement and a variety of jobs before becoming the Secretary of the Independent Labour Party in Scotland from 1908 until 1912. In 1912, Dallas moved back to London to work as the organiser of the National Federation of Women Workers, but soon moved to the Workers' Union. In 1917, he was appointed to the Agricultural Wages Board. In 1922, he moved to the newly built Welwyn Garden City. The 1923 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 December 1923. The Conservative Party (UK), Conservatives, led by Stanley Baldwin, won the most seats, but Labour Party (UK), Labour, led by Ramsay MacDonald, and H. H. Asquith's reunited Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party gained enough seats to produce a hung parliament. It is the most recent UK general election in which a third party (here, the Liberals) won over 100 seats. The Liberals' percentage of the vote, 29.7%, has not been exceeded by a third party at any general election since. MacDonald formed the First MacDonald ministry, first ever Labour government with tacit support from the Liberals.
