Thomas Elavanal
Mar Thomas Elavanal (born 28 March 1950) is a Syro Malabar Catholic Bishop. He is the Bishop of the Diocese of Kalyan. Biography Bishop Mar Thomas Elavanal was born to Zacharias and Thresia on 28 March 1950 at Mutholy, near Palai, in Kerala. He was born into a branch of the ancient Palackal family of Pallipuram. The family soon migrated to Chathankottunada, near Kuttiady in Calicut district, where he completed his high school education. He then joined the MCBS Minor Seminary in June 1966. He had his first religious profession on 17 May 1968 and priestly ordination by Mar Sebastian Mankuzhikary on 22 December 1975. After a brief period of 3 years appointment at the MCBS Minor Seminary, Kottayam, he travelled to Rome and the US for his Higher Studies. He holds a licentiate in liturgy from Pontifical Oriental Institute and a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, ''Angelicum'' in Rome. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Kalyan is an Eastern Catholic eparchy in India within the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, based in Kalyan, India. The eparchy was established to cater the spiritual needs of the Syro Malabar Christians based in the Indian State of Maharashtra including the metropolitan cities of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik, Nasik. Its first bishop was Mar Paul Chittilapilly. The current bishop is Mar Thomas Elavanal. The Eparchy celebrated its silver jubilee in the year 2013. Palai, Kerala
Pallai ( ta, பளை, si, පල්ලෙයි), also spelt Palai, is a small town in the Kilinochchi District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It is located near the coast on the northern peninsula, approximately south-east of Jaffna. In 1861 the Church Mission Society sent Rev. John Backus to Pallai to establish a Christian community in the town. This led to the construction and dedication of St. Andrew's Church on 30 November 1895. In 1921 the government declared a area adjacent to the town as a forest reserve. Transport Pallai is located on the (A9) Kandy-Jaffna Highway. It is served by a railway station on the national network which was out of use due to war damage. In 2009, agreements were made to restore the line back into service. Palackal Thoma Malpan (c. 1780 – 1841) was an Indian Catholic priest of the Syro-Malabar Church based in India. He was the senior priest and founder who envisaged the formation of the first native religious institution in India ,Carmelites of Mary Immaculate also known as C.M.I. (the first native religious institute of the Eastern Catholic Church), and the founder of the first seminary for Syro-Malabar Catholics. The Pontifical Oriental Institute, also known as the Orientale, is a Catholic institution of higher education located in Rome and focusing on Eastern Christianity. The Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) is an indigenous clerical congregation of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in southern India. The birth of MCBS In the beginning of the twentieth century the Eucharistic-centered re-awakening in the life of the Church, initiated by Pope Pius X (1903–1914), had its impact on the Syro-Malabar Church.
