Thomas Edvard von Westen Sylow (3 August 1792 – 20 December 1875) was the Norwegian Minister of the Army 1848–1852 and 1852–1853, and member of the Council of State Division in Stockholm 1851–1852 and 1853–1854. Peter Ludwig Mejdell Sylow
Peter Ludwig Mejdell Sylow () (12 December 1832 – 7 September 1918) was a Norwegian mathematician who proved foundational results in group theory. Biography He was born and died in Christiania (now Oslo). Sylow was a son of government minister Thomas Edvard von Westen Sylow, and a brother of military officer and sports official Carl Sylow. He attended Christiania Cathedral School (1850) and the University of Christiania (cand.real. 1856). Sylow was a high school teacher at Hartvig Nissen School, later before becoming a headmaster in Halden from 1858 to 1898. He was a substitute lecturer at University of Christiania in 1862, covering Galois theory. It was then that he posed the question that led to his theorems regarding Sylow subgroups. Sylow published the Sylow theorems in 1872, and subsequently devoted eight years of his life, with Sophus Lie, to the project of editing the mathematical works of his countryman, Niels Henrik Abel. Carl Sylow
Carl Christian Weinwich Sylow (26 January 1838 – 12 December 1930) was a Norwegian military officer and sports official. Sylow was born in Christiania to government minister Thomas Edvard von Westen Sylow and Magdalene Mejdell, and was a brother of mathematician Peter Ludwig Mejdell Sylow. He graduated as military officer in 1861 and from the Norwegian Military College in 1867, and was promoted Colonel in 1894. From 1892 to 1902 he chaired the sports association Centralforeningen for Idræt. He was also president of the Norwegian Gymnastics Federation from 1895 to 1899.
