Thomas Dalby (16th Century)
Major General Thomas Gerald Dalby (13 January 188014 March 1963) was a senior British Army officer who saw service in three conflicts. Military career After being educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Dalby was commissioned into the King's Royal Rifle Corps on 5 April 1899. He saw service during the Second Boer War, where he was wounded, later campaigned in Somaliland in 1904. His service in the First World War was recognised when he was appointed a companion of the Distinguished Service Order in the 1917 New Year Honours. Additionally, he was mentioned in dispatches four and was wounded twice, and married in 1917. He became commanding officer of 2nd Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1928 and commander of 3rd Infantry Brigade in 1931. The 1917 New Year Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Bernard Paget
General Sir Bernard Charles Tolver Paget, (15 September 1887 – 16 February 1961) was a senior British Army officer who served with distinction in the First World War, and then later during the Second World War. During the latter, he commanded the 21st Army Group from June to December 1943 and was Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) Middle East Command from January 1944 to October 1946.
