Thomas Cooke (machinist)
Thomas Cooke (8 March 1807 – 19 October 1868) was a British scientific instrument maker based in York. He founded T. Cooke & Sons, the scientific instrument company. Life Thomas Cooke was born in Allerthorpe, near Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, the son of James Cook (a shoemaker). His formal education consisted of two years at an elementary school (possibly the school of John Whitaker, also of Allerthorpe), but he continued learning after this and he taught himself navigation and astronomy with the intention of becoming a sailor. His mother dissuaded him from that career and he became a teacher. He made such a success of being an impromptu teacher to the farmers’ sons of the Pocklington district, that only a year later he was able to open a village school at Bielby. He continued to teach others by day and learn himself by night, and soon moved his school from Bielby to Skirpenbeck. Thomas Cook (22 November 1808 – 18 July 1892) was an English businessman. He is best known for founding the travel agency Thomas Cook & Son. He was also one of the initial developers of the "package tour" including travel, accommodations, and the like. Early life Thomas Cook was born on 22 November 1808, to John and Elizabeth Cook, who lived at 9 Quick Close in the village of Melbourne, Derbyshire. At the age of 10, Cook started working as an assistant to a local market gardener on Lord Melbourne's estate. In 1828, he became a Baptist missionary and toured the region as a village evangelist and distributing pamphlets and, in the 1830s, he became involved in the temperance movement. On 2 March 1833, Cook married Marianne Mason (1807–1884) at the parish church in Barrowden in Rutland. A son, John Mason Cook, was born on 13 January 1834. A daughter, Annie Elizabeth, born on 21 June 1845, died in a bath aged 35 after inhaling poisonous fumes from a faulty water heater. ...

Skirpenbeck
Skirpenbeck is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated north-west of Stamford Bridge just north of the A166 road. According to the 2011 UK census, Skirpenbeck parish had a population of 192, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 142. In 2019 this was estimated to be 304. The place-name 'Skirpenbeck' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Scarpenbec''. It derives from the Old Norse ''skerping'' and ''bekkr'', meaning barren land by a beck or stream. Skirpenbeck is near Stamford Bridge, over the River Derwent, near where King Harold of England defeated Harald Hardrada King of Norway in 1066. John Phillips FRS (25 December 1800 – 24 April 1874) was an English geologist. In 1841 he published the first global geologic time scale based on the correlation of fossils in rock strata, thereby helping to standardize terminology including the term Mesozoic, which he invented. Life and work Phillips was born at Marden in Wiltshire. His father belonged to an old Welsh family, but settled in England as an officer of excise and married the sister of William Smith, a renowned English geologist. Stonegate is a street in the city centre of York, in England, one of the streets most visited by tourists. Most of the buildings along the street are listed, meaning they are of national importance due to their architecture or history. Ogleforth
Ogleforth is a street in the city centre of York, in England. History The street lies immediately inside the north-east section of the York city walls; this part of the walls' alignment is unchanged from the Roman Eboracum. Remains of a barracks building and store have been excavated along the street. The first appearance of the name "Ogleforth" was around 1110, it referring to a ford named for either an owl, or a person with the name Ugel. The ford may have crossed a ditch between the street and the walls. The street long lay within the close of York Minster.
