Thomas Amarasuriya
Thomas Amarasuriya, OBE (17 June 1907 – 5 May 1979) was a Ceylonese planter and politician. He was a member of the State Council of Ceylon and President of the Senate of Ceylon. He was the first Ceylonese Chairman of the Planters Association and a brother of H. W. Amarasuriya. Thomas Amarasuriya was born on 17 June 1907 at Amaragiri Walauwa to the wealthy Amarasuriya family in Unawatuna, Galle. His father Henry Mahendrapala Amarasuriya was a proprietor, shipping merchant and an independence activist. His mother was Caroline de Silva. Both his grand fathers Muhandiram Thomas de Silva Amarasuriya and Juanis de Silva were wealthy businessman of Galle. His elder brother was Henry Woodward Amarasuriya. Shri (; , ) is a Sanskrit term denoting resplendence, wealth and prosperity, primarily used as an honorific. The word is widely used in South and Southeast Asian languages such as Marathi, Malay (including Indonesian and Malaysian), Javanese, Balinese, Sinhala, Thai, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Nepali, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit, Pali, Khmer, and also among Philippine languages. Mahendra J. C. Amarasuriya is a Sri Lankan banker and philanthropist. A former President of the Lions Clubs International, he was the former Chairman of the Commercial Bank of Ceylon. Early life Mahendra Amarasuriya was born to Thomas Amarasuriya, OBE the President of the Senate of Ceylon. Hemaka Amarasuriya is a Sri Lankan corporate leader and executive, who holds and has held many corporate positions in Sri Lanka and the region. He was the former chairman and CEO of Singer Sri Lanka. Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (2 August 1832 – 17 February 1907) was an American military officer, journalist, lawyer, Freemason and the co-founder and first president of the Theosophical Society. Olcott was the first well-known American of European ancestry to make a formal conversion to Buddhism.
