Thessaloniki Urban Area
The Thessaloniki metropolitan area or larger urban zone (LUZ) is the complete area covered and directly influenced by Thessaloniki. The metropolitan area traditionally consisted of the municipality of Thessaloniki and its immediate surroundings, what is today referred to as the Thessaloniki urban area. However, since the mid to late 1990s, the areas surrounding the urban area, have succumbed to urban sprawl and what used to be agrarian communities are rapidly urbanizing and being developed into suburbs or exurbs. This is creating new problems for a region already facing issues such as pollution, traffic congestion and social ills. Thessalonians usually refer to 6 municipalities and 1 municipal unit as the "City of Thessaloniki" (or the Thessaloniki urban area); this is the contiguous densely built-up urban area of the city. Larger Urban Zone
The larger urban zone (LUZ), or functional urban area (FUA), is a measure of the population and expanse of metropolitan and surrounding areas which may or may not be exclusively urban. It consists of a city and its commuting zone outside it. The definition was introduced in 2004 by Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Union (EU), in agreement with the national statistics offices in the member states. Eurostat data is provided only for zones in the EU countries, candidate countries and EFTA countries. Several cities were excluded by definition from the 2004 list of LUZs on technical, definitional grounds, such as the coincidence of the metropolitan area with the urban zone. The LUZ represents an attempt at a harmonised definition of the metropolitan area. Chalastra
Chalastra ( el, Χαλάστρα) is a town and former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Before 1926, it was known as Κουλουκιά - ''Kouloukia'' ( bg, Кулакия - ''Kulakiya''). It was renamed to ''Chalastra'' in 1926, to Πύργος - ''Pyrgos'' in 1955 and back to ''Chalastra'' in 1980. Epanomi
Epanomi ( el, Επανομή) is a town and was a former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Thermaikos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located 25 km away from the city center of Thessaloniki. The municipal unit includes the village of Mesimeri, with a combined population of 10,810 (2011). The municipal unit Epanomi has an area of 91.541 km2, and the community Epanomi has an area of 78.716 km2. Vasilika ( el, Βασιλικά) is a community and a municipal unit of the Thermi municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform the municipal unit of Vasilika was an independent municipality, with the respective community being the seat. The 2011 census recorded 4,200 inhabitants in the community and 9,911 inhabitants in the municipal unit. The community of Vasilika covers an area of 56.81 km2 while the respective municipal unit covers an area of 200.336 km2. Michaniona ( el, Μηχανιώνα) was a former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, the town/suburb is part of the municipality of Thermaikos, of which it is a municipal unit. Population 11,901 (2011). Chortiatis ( el, Χορτιάτης) is a suburb and a former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 Kallikratis local government reform it is part of the municipality Pylaia-Chortiatis, of which it is a municipal unit. It lies at 600 metres altitude on the slopes of the Mount Chortiatis, from which it takes its name.
