Theologische Realenzyklopädie
The ''Theologische Realenzyklopädie'' (''TRE'') is a German encyclopedia of theology and religious studies. It contains some 2000 articles in 36 volumes. The first installment was published in 1977, the last in 2004. Genesis and editors The ''Theologische Realenzyklopädie'' is published by Walter de Gruyter and continues the nineteenth-century tradition of specialized encyclopedias, specifically that of the '' Realenzyklopädie für protestantische Theologie und Kirche'', published in Leipzig between 1896 and 1913. But in contrast to the latter, the ''TRE'' treats its subjects in an ecumenical fashion. The ''TRE'' was edited by fourteen main editors. The primary editor was the bishop and church historian Gerhard Müller of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick. Until volume 12 his fellow main editor was Gerhard Krause, professor of theology at the University of Bonn. Theology
Theology is the systematic study of the nature of the divine and, more broadly, of religious belief. It is taught as an academic discipline, typically in universities and seminaries. Walter de Gruyter GmbH, known as De Gruyter (), is a German scholarly publishing house specializing in academic literature. History The roots of the company go back to 1749 when Frederick the Great granted the Königliche Realschule in Berlin the royal privilege to open a bookstore and "to publish good and useful books". In 1800, the store was taken over by Georg Reimer (1776–1842), operating as the ''Reimer'sche Buchhandlung'' from 1817, while the school’s press eventually became the ''Georg Reimer Verlag''. From 1816, Reimer used the representative Sacken'sche Palace on Berlin's Wilhelmstraße for his family and the publishing house, whereby the wings contained his print shop and press. Ecumenism
Ecumenism (), also spelled oecumenism, is the concept and principle that Christians who belong to different Christian denominations should work together to develop closer relationships among their churches and promote Christian unity. The adjective ''ecumenical'' is thus applied to any initiative that encourages greater cooperation and union among Christian denominations and churches. Gerhard Müller (theologian)
Gerhard Müller (born 10 May 1929) is a German Lutheran theologian. He served as Landesbischof of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick between 1982 and 1994. Life Müller was born on 10 May 1929 in Marburg. He studied evangelical theology at the University of Marburg, University of Göttingen and the University of Tübingen. Müller was professor of historical theology at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg for 15 years, from 1967 to 1982. He was editor of the ''Theologische Realenzyklopädie''. He became Landesbischof of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick on 1 October 1982 and served until 31 May 1994. From 1990 to 1993 he also served as Leading Bishop (German: ''Leitender Bischof'') of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick (german: Evangelisch-Lutherische Landeskirche in Braunschweig) is a Lutheran church in the German states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The seat of the Landesbischof (bishop) is Wolfenbüttel. Its district as a '' Landeskirche'' covers the former Free State of Brunswick in the borders of 1945.
