Theodor Kalide
Theodor Erdmann Kalide (8 February 1801 in Königshütte – 26 August 1863 in Gleiwitz) was a German sculptor.Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB). Volume 15, Duncker & Humblot, Leipzig 1882, p. 2(German text in Wikisource)/ref> On the recommendation of the mining office (Ober bergamt) Kalide went from Silesia to Berlin around 1818/1819 where he studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts. At about the same time he entered the workshop of the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. Afterward, Kalide was taken over into the sculptor's studio of Christian Daniel Rauch. Under Rauch's direction, he created the "Sleeping Lion", a bronze cast of which reached the grave monument for general Gerhard von Scharnhorst at the Invalids' Cemetery in Berlin, as well as the "Guarding Lion" as a counterpart. Chorzów ( ; ; german: link=no, Königshütte ; szl, Chorzōw) is a city in the Silesia region of southern Poland, near Katowice. Chorzów is one of the central cities of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union – a metropolis with a population of 2 million. The Alte Nationalgalerie ( ''Old National Gallery'') is a listed building on the Museum Island in the Mitte (locality), historic centre of Berlin, Germany. The gallery was built from 1862 to 1876 by the order of King Frederick William IV of Prussia according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler and Johann Heinrich Strack in Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival architecture, Renaissance Revival styles. The building's outside stair features a memorial to Frederick William IV. Pariser Platz ( en, Paris Square) is a square in the historic center of Berlin, Germany, situated by the Brandenburg Gate at the end of the Unter den Linden. The square is named after the French capital of Paris to commemorate the anti-Napoleon Allies' victory at the Battle of Paris (1814), and is one of the main focal points of the city. Unter den Linden (, "under the linden trees") is a boulevard in the central Mitte district of Berlin, the capital of Germany. Running from the City Palace to Brandenburg Gate, it is named after the linden (lime in England and Ireland, not related to citrus lime) trees that line the grassed pedestrian mall on the median and the two broad carriageways. The avenue links numerous Berlin sights, landmarks and rivers for sightseeing.
