Themba Nkabinde
Lieutenant General Themba Nkabinde is a South African Army General Officer, currently serving as Chief Human Resources. Military career He joined Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1977 and he left South Africa for training in Angola. From 1991 to 1992 he was the deputy military attache in Tanzania and completed a senior command and staff course in India. In 1994 he integrated into the SANDF and served as the senior staff officer Africa under the director operations at Chief of Joint Operations and then as the deputy chief director Army Force Structure. He became the commanding officer of the Infantry Formation on 1 April 2003. Lieutenant General
Lieutenant general (Lt Gen, LTG and similar) is a three-star military rank (NATO code OF-8) used in many countries. The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second-in-command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general. In modern armies, lieutenant general normally ranks immediately below general and above major general; it is equivalent to the navy rank of vice admiral, and in air forces with a separate rank structure, it is equivalent to air marshal. A lieutenant general commands an army corps, made up of typically three army divisions, and consisting of around 60 000 to 70 000 soldiers (U.S.). The South African Army Infantry Formation supervises all infantry within the South African Army. History Origins: Union Defence Force South African Infantry originated as the ''Infantry Branch'' of the Union Defence Forces in 1913. In 1915, the defence forces established the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force for war service outside Southern Africa. It included the ''South African Infantry'', comprising twelve battalions, and the ''Cape Corps'', comprising two battalions of Coloured volunteers. These units were disbanded in 1919. The Infantry Branch was enlarged in 1934, and the mounted rifles regiments were converted to infantry in 1935. SANDF
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) comprises the armed forces of South Africa. The commander of the SANDF is appointed by the President of South Africa from one of the armed services. They are in turn accountable to the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans of the Defence Department. The military as it exists today was created in 1994, following South Africa's first nonracial election in April of that year and the adoption of a new constitution. Lt General Lindile Yam (born on 8 August 1960) is the former SANDF Chief of staff and the former Chief of the South African Army. Career He joined Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC, in 1981 and became part of the South African National Defence Force in 1994 when all the forces were integrated. He served as an Officer Commanding of the 13 South African Infantry Battalion from November 1994 to November 1997. The Chief of Defence Force Staff (C Def F S) was a post in the South African Defence Force and the South African National Defence Force. History The Chief of Defence Force Staff was a lieutenant general post in the South African Defence Force which traces its origins from the sixties. In the middle sixties, the expansion of the Defence Force necessitated some changes to the overall structure and at that time, the posts of GOC Joint Combat Forces (GOC JCF), Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Defence Force Administration to name a few were established.
