Fort Smith, Northwest Territories
Fort Smith ( chp, Thebacha "beside the rapids") is a town in the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. It is located in the southeastern portion of the Northwest Territories, on the Slave River and adjacent to the Alberta border along the 60th parallel north. History Fort Smith was founded around the Slave River. It served a vital link for water transportation between southern Canada and the western Arctic. Early fur traders found an established portage route from what is now Fort Fitzgerald on the western bank of the Slave River to Fort Smith. This route allowed its users to navigate the four sets of impassable rapids (Cassette Rapids, Pelican Rapids, Mountain Rapids, and Rapids of the Drowned). The portage trail had been traditionally used by local Indigenous people for centuries. The Indigenous population of the region shifted as the fortunes of the tribes changed. Jeannie Marie-Jewell
Jeannie Marie-Jewell (born October 7, 1961) is a territorial level politician from northern Canada. She served as the first female Speaker in the history of the Northwest Territories legislature. Political career Marie-Jewell was first elected to the Northwest Territories legislature in the 1987 Northwest Territories for the riding of Slave River. She served that district until it was abolished in 1991. She rose to prominence in her first term in office holding a number of cabinet posts. She became Minister of Social Services, Minister of Personnel and Minister Responsible for the Women's Secretariat. She was also the Minister Responsible for the Highway Transport Board and Workers' Compensation Board and Minister for Youth. J. Michael Miltenberger (born March 17, 1951 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a former carpenter and a former territorial level politician from northern Canada. Early life J. Michael Miltenberger was born in Ottawa. His family moved to Northern Canada in 1962. He attended post secondary education at the University of Lethbridge and Arctic College. Political career Miltenberger began his political career on the municipal level. He served on the town council including two years as mayor for the town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories from 1983 to 1989. The 2007 Northwest Territories general election took place on October 1, 2007. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly from single member districts conducted under first-past-the-post voting system. The South Slave Region is one of five administrative regions in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. The 2019 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 1, 2019. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Election On September 6, 2019, Premier Bob McLeod announced that he would not seek re-election. Four other incumbents announced they would not seek re-election, including three of seven cabinet ministers — Health Minister Glen Abernethy, Housing Minister Alfred Moses, and Finance Minister Robert C. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The election was conducted under a non-partisan rules as the government operates under consensus, and Elections N.W.T. has not recognized parties since 1905.
