History It was one of two local newspapers under the same ownership that published in Cowley County, Kansas - the other being The Arkansas City Traveler. The publication of the newspaper dated back to 1931. The newspaper was previously published under the name ''Winfield Daily Free Press'' from 1924 until 1931. In 2017, ''The Arkansas City Traveler'' and ''The Winfield Daily Courier'' merged into a new publication named ''The Cowley Courier Traveler''. Winfield, Kansas
Winfield is a city and county seat of Cowley County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Walnut River in South Central Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 11,777. It is home to Southwestern College. History 19th century Winfield was founded in 1870. It was named for Rev. Winfield Scott, who promised to build the town a church in exchange for the naming rights. The first post office at Winfield was established in May, 1870. In 1873, Winfield incorporated as a city. Cowley County (county code CL) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 34,549. Its county seat is Winfield, and its most populous city is Arkansas City. History For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. The first European visitor to Kansas was the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1541. In 1601, the Governor of New Mexico, Juan de Oñate, visited Etzanoa, a settlement of several thousand Wichita people near Arkansas City along the Walnut River.
