''The Cowley Courier Traveler'' is a local newspaper from Arkansas City, Kansas, United States. History ''The Arkansas City Traveler'' was one of two local newspapers that published in Cowley County, Kansas - the other being '' The Winfield Daily Courier''. It was owned by Stauffer Communications from 1924 until 1994, when Stauffer was acquired by Morris Communications. In 2001, Morris sold the paper to Winfield Publishing Company. In 2017, ''The Arkansas City Traveler'' and '' The Winfield Daily Courier'' merged into a new publication named ''The Cowley Courier Traveler''. Arkansas City () is a city in Cowley County, Kansas, United States, situated at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Walnut River in the southwestern part of the county. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 11,974. The name of this city is not pronounced like the nearby state of Arkansas, but rather as (the final "s" is pronounced). Over the years there has been much confusion about the regional pronunciation of "Arkansas", which locals render as rather than . Throughout much of Kansas, residents use this alternative pronunciation when referring to the Arkansas River, as well as Arkansas Street in the city of Wichita. Cowley County (county code CL) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 34,549. Its county seat is Winfield, and its most populous city is Arkansas City. History For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. The first European visitor to Kansas was the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1541. In 1601, the Governor of New Mexico, Juan de Oñate, visited Etzanoa, a settlement of several thousand Wichita people near Arkansas City along the Walnut River. Stauffer Communications was a privately held media corporation based in Topeka, Kansas, that owned many publications and broadcast outlets, including the ''Topeka Capital-Journal'' and WIBW, WIBW-FM, and WIBW-TV. The company operated from 1930 to 1995. History The company was founded by Oscar S. Stauffer in 1930 as Stauffer Publications.
