The White House Historical Association, founded in 1961 through efforts of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, is a private, non-profit organization that works to preserve the history of the White House and make that history more accessible to the public. , the president of the association is Stewart McLaurin. History After moving into the White House in 1961, Jacqueline Kennedy founded the White House Historical Association, which was chartered on November 3 of that year. The goals of the association were to raise private funds for maintaining and renovating the White House and to create an official White House guidebook. Jackson Place
Jackson Place is a Washington, D.C. street located across from the White House and forming the western border of Lafayette Square between Pennsylvania Avenue and H Street, NW, beginning just south of Connecticut Avenue. History The block is situated on land once owned by the Decatur family, until 1869 when they sold it to Lorenzo Sherwood, who in turn sold the land to John Knower. In 1957, the Federal government acquired the townhouses on Jackson Place. The government had plans to demolish the buildings to make way for construction of a new Federal office building on the land. Stewart McLaurin
Stewart McLaurin is an author and non-profit executive who is now the president of the White House Historical Association. Background McLaurin is the son of Stewart Parnell McLaurin and Gwendolyn McLaurin (née Stafford). An Alabama native, McLaurin attended Shades Valley High School and the University of Alabama. Active in philanthropic management, from 1989 to 2014, McLaurin has held senior positions with the Mount Vernon estate, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, the Motion Picture Association, Georgetown University, the American Village Citizenship Trust, and the American Red Cross. White House
The White House is the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., and has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.
