''The West China Missionary News'' (''WCMN'') was a monthly news magazine published in Chengdu (Chengtu) from 1899 to 1943 by the West China Missions Advisory Board, and printed by Canadian Methodist Mission Press. It was aimed at Protestant missionaries working in Sichuan (or referred to as "West China"), and was the first and longest-running English-language newspaper in that province. History and overview The establishment of ''The West China Missionary News'' was one of the results of a Protestant conference held at Chongqing (Chungking) in January 1899. The periodical was started as an organ of communication among various missionary workers. It came to light in February 1899, under the editorship of Mary Jane Davidson, with the assistance of her husband, Robert John Davidson, who were Quaker missionaries of the Friends' Foreign Mission Association (FFMA). Vyvyan Donnithorne
The Venerable Vyvyan Henry Donnithorne, MC, MA (8 January 1886 – 12 December 1968) was Archdeacon of Western Szechwan from 1935 to 1949. Biography Vyvyan Donnithorne was of Cornish descent. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, Clare College, Cambridge and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. After wartime service in the Royal Hampshire Regiment he was ordained in 1919. He was a member of the Church Missionary Society in Szechwan (now romanized as Sichuan), West China from 1920 to 1949. He served as pastor in the Gospel Church of Hanchow, since 1929. He was a chaplain in the Canary Islands, Spain from 1949 to 1953. In retirement, he lived in Hong Kong. He died in 1968 and was buried in Hong Kong Cemetery. He was the father of Audrey Donnithorne; and was one of the key figures in the discovery of the archaeological site now known as Sanxingdui. Sichuan (; zh, c=, labels=no, ; zh, p=Sìchuān; alternatively romanized as Szechuan or Szechwan; formerly also referred to as "West China" or "Western China" by Protestant missions) is a province in Southwest China occupying most of the Sichuan Basin and the easternmost part of the Tibetan Plateau between the Jinsha River on the west, the Daba Mountains in the north and the Yungui Plateau to the south. Leslie Gifford Kilborn
Leslie Gifford Kilborn (April 7, 1895 – June 23, 1967), the son of Omar L. Kilborn and Retta Kilborn, was born in Sichuan, western China. Kilborn greatly advanced missionary work in west China. He was the author of multiple texts, translator of many textbooks, and served as director of the College of Medicine of West China Union University and dean of the Faculty of the College of Medicine. Background Kilborn married Dr. Janet R. McClure, the daughter of missionaries in the Canadian Presbyterian Mission in north China. Therefore, she was well acquainted with Mandarin Chinese, and both began working immediately for missionaries in Sichuan. They had three children. Janet passed away in 1945, and Kilborn married Jean Ewart Millar, an anesthetic specialist. They lived under the Communist regime in China, and helped refugees who sought shelter and accommodation.
