The Twentieth Duke
''The Twentieth Duke'' (Italian: ''Il ventesimo duca'') is a 1945 Italian comedy film directed by Lucio De Caro and starring Paola Veneroni, Roberto Villa and Paola Borboni.Chiti & Poppi p.403 The film is based on a 1925 play by Ugo Falena which had previous been made into films on two occasions ''The Last Lord'' (1926) and ''The Woman Dressed As a Man'' (1932). The story tells of the only surviving relative of an old Duke, his granddaughter, who pretends to be a man in order to convince him that the line of succession is secure. It was shot at the Cinecitta Studios in Rome. It was made in 1943, but its release was delayed for two years. It did not go on a full national release until early 1946. Giuseppe Porelli (24 November 1897 – 5 March 1982) was an Italian stage, film and television actor. Life and career Born Giuseppe Porcelli in Naples, he graduated from the Istituto Tecnico and became an employee of Ferrovie dello Stato. While there, he spent his free time involved in amateur dramatics. In 1918 he left his job to accept employment as a professional actor in the company of Irma Gramatica. Porelli later entered some of the most important stage companies of the time, specializing as a sidekick in revue shows. Active on films since 1926, he had an intense career as a character actor, mostly cast in roles of elegant and fashionable gentlemen in comedy films. He was married to the actress Rinalda Marchetti. Domenico Viglione Borghese (13 July 1877 – 26 October 1957) was an Italian operatic baritone and actor. Early life Born in Mondovì, he gave up his studies in medicine to dedicate himself to the study of singing, first in Milan and later with Luigi Leonesi at Conservatorio Rossini in Pesaro, where he was admitted in 1896. He made his début in 1899 at the Teatro Verdi in Lodi as the Herald in ''Lohengrin''. Though he continued working in small, provincial theaters, he soon gave up opera, saying that he did not care "for the atmosphere and intrigues."
