The Teacher From Vigevano
''Il maestro di Vigevano'', internationally released as ''The Teacher from Vigevano'', is a 1963 Italian comedy drama film directed by Elio Petri. It is based on the novel with the same name written by Lucio Mastronardi. Plot Maestro Antonio Mombelli teaches in an elementary school in Vigevano. His life drags on between daily miseries, the harassment of the director of the Pereghi school and the demands of his wife Ada, a frustrated and dissatisfied woman with the modest lifestyle that her husband can grant her. Antonio's only friend is the teacher Nanini, eternal alternate. Antonio is proud to belong to the intellectual class: he considers it a shame for himself and for his family that his wife wants to work in the factory to supplement his income and that his son, pushed by his mother, occasionally hires himself as a boy. Eraclio Petri (29 January 1929 – 10 November 1982), commonly known as Elio Petri, was an Italian film director, screenwriter, theatre director, and critic associated with the political cinema in the 1960s and '70s. His film ''Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion'' won the 1971 Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film, and his film ''The Working Class Goes to Heaven'' won the Palme d'Or at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. Eva Magni (July 28, 1909 – February 11, 2005) was an Italian stage and film actress. She was active between 1926 and the late 1970s. Biography Magni was born in Milan into a family of artists, and made her professional debut in 1926, in the stage company Teatro d'Arte di Roma directed by Luigi Pirandello. She debuted as lead actress two years later, in the company directed by Dario Niccodemi. After working in the stage companies led by Memo Benassi, Maria Melato and Laura Carli, in 1940 she was appointed first actress in the Renzo Ricci's company, with whom she eventually started a sentimental relationship. She married Ricci in December 1960 after the death of his first wife, Margherita Bagni.
