The Swift Show
''The Swift Show'' is an American variety/game show that aired on Thursdays at 8:30pm EST on NBC premiering April 1, 1948 and running to 1949. Overview The series, sponsored by the Swift & Company meat packing company, was mainly a musical variety show hosted by Lanny Ross, although during its first few months, it also featured a quiz show segment. Guest stars included Eileen Barton, Frank Fontaine, Max Showalter, and Susan Shaw. For the first five months, a quiz show segment was included. In September 1948, the show became "Lanny's penthouse with his girlfriend Eileen Barton visiting". In March 1949, the show reverted to a purely musical variety show. Episode status Two episodes, from May 13, 1948 and May 27, 1948, are in the collection of the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and an episode from March 31, 1949 is in the collection of the Paley Center for Media. Lanny Ross
Lancelot Patrick Ross (January 19, 1906 – April 25, 1988)DeLong, Thomas A. (1996). ''Radio Stars: An Illustrated Biographical Dictionary of 953 Performers, 1920 through 1960''. McFarland & Company, Inc. . P. was an American singer, pianist and songwriter. Biography Ross was born in Seattle, Washington. His parents were Douglas and Winifred Ross, both natives of England. He graduated from Taft School in 1924, where he captained the track team and led the glee club, and Yale University in 1928, where he blossomed as one of the nation's foremost intercollegiate track performers as well as soloist with the famous Yale Glee Club, and he was a member of Zeta Psi and Skull and Bones. Additionally, in 1931 he earned a law degree from Columbia Law School., earning the wherewithal by making radio appearances. Susan Shaw
Susan Shaw (29 August 192927 November 1978) was an English actress. Biography Shaw was born Patsy Sloots in West Norwood, London. She had wanted to become a dress designer and was working as a typist at the Ministry for Information when she did a screen test for the J. Arthur Rank Organisation. They signed her to a term contract and trained her at its "charm school". She had a bit part in the musical '' London Town'' (1946) and a larger part in another musical, '' Walking on Air'' (1946). She had a small role in ''The Upturned Glass'' (1947) and '' Jassy'' (1947). Shaw was in ''Holiday Camp'' (1947) which introduced the Huggett family, although she did not play a Huggett. Shaw was given her most noticeable role to date in ''It Always Rains on Sunday'' (1947) for Ealing. She had another decent support part in '' My Brother's Keeper'' (1948) at Gainsborough and ''London Belongs to Me'' (1948), in the latter replacing Pat Roc who pulled out. ''Swift Home Service Club'' is a 1947-1948 American television show, "credited with being the first sponsored daytime network TV show." Hosted by Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenburg, it aired Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. ET. Broadcast history The show launched on NBC Television in May 1947, Mondays through Fridays at 1 p.m. ET. UCLA Film And Television Archive
The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a visual arts organization focused on the preservation, study, and appreciation of film and television, based at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Max Showalter
Max Gordon Showalter (June 2, 1917 – July 30, 2000), sometimes credited as Casey Adams, was an American film, television, and stage actor, as well as a composer, pianist, and singer. He appeared on more than 1,000 television programs. One of Showalter's memorable roles was as the husband of Jean Peters' character in the 1953 film '' Niagara''. Early life Showalter was born in Caldwell, Kansas, the son of Elma Roxanna (Dodson) Showalter (1889–1953), a music teacher, and Ira Edward Showalter (1887–1953), who worked in the oil industry and was also a banker and farmer. As a toddler, he developed a desire for acting while accompanying his mother to local theatres where she played piano for silent movies. He served in the Army in World War II as an entertainer.
