The Southside Times
The Southside Times is a weekly newspaper that began publishing in 1928. The newspaper delivers community news to Beech Grove, Greenwood, Southport, and Center Grove, and Franklin, Perry, and White River townships. Published every Thursday, 17,500 copies are delivered to the greater south side of Indianapolis and its suburbs either to newsstands or through home delivery. Places the paper is delivered to include University of Indianapolis, several Kroger supermarkets, McDonald's restaurants, and several locally owned businesses. The Southside Times sells to many advertisers, allowing the paper to be available at no cost. Current employees include editor-in-chief Nicole Davis, Director of New Business Development Grady Gaynor, digital consultant Andrew Angle, and sales manager Mark Gasper. Tabloid (newspaper Format)
A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. A 1902 item in London's ''Westminster Gazette'' noted, "The proprietor intends to give in tabloid form all the news printed by other journals." Thus ''tabloid journalism'' in 1901, originally meant a paper that condensed stories into a simplified, easily absorbed format. Greenwood, Indiana
Greenwood is a city in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 63,830 at the 2020 Census. Greenwood is located between Indiana State Road 37 and Interstate 65. The city shares a border with Indianapolis and is the most populous suburban municipality in the southern portion of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. History The first inhabitants of the area currently known as Greenwood were the Delaware Indians (Lenape). Southport, Indiana
Southport is an excluded city in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,712 at the 2010 census. History The area that is now known as Southport was a wooded area until the first European American settlers arrived in the 1820s. Early settlers included Jacob Smock and Randall Litzey in 1822, Samuel Brewer in 1823, Benjamin McFarland in 1826, and Samuel and Mary Bryan in 1828. Mary Bryan is remembered as one of the first European American women to cross the Cumberland Mountains. By 1828 Southport was a stagecoach stop on the Madison-Indianapolis road. Franklin Township, Marion County, Indiana
Franklin Township is one of the nine townships of Marion County, Indiana, United States. Located in the southeast corner of the county, it has been subsumed into the city of Indianapolis along with most of the rest of the county. It contains the communities of Acton, Wanamaker, and the eastern portion of the excluded city of Beech Grove. Franklin Township was organized in the 1820s. Perry Township is one of the nine townships of Marion County, Indiana, United States, located in the south central part of the county. It was laid out in 1822 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and named after Oliver Hazard Perry – a War of 1812 hero. The township population was 108,972 at the 2010 census.
