The Sons Of Katie Elder
''The Sons of Katie Elder'' is a 1965 American Western film in Panavision, directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne and Dean Martin. It was filmed principally in Mexico. Plot The four adult sons of Katie Elder – John, who is a famous (or infamous) professional gunman; Tom, a professional gambler; Bud, the youngest brother, in his first year at mining college; and Matt, an unsuccessful hardware dealer – reunite in their hometown of Clearwater, Texas, (107 miles east of Dallas in northeast Texas), in 1898 for their mother's funeral, sharing regret that none of them has lived up to her high expectations of them. The townspeople and new deputy sheriff are unfriendly, to John and Tom in particular. John Qualen (born Johan Mandt Kvalen, December 8, 1899 – September 12, 1987) was an American character actor of Norwegian heritage who specialized in Scandinavian roles. Early years Qualen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, the son of immigrants from Norway; his father was a Lutheran minister and changed the family's original surname, "Kvalen", to "Qualen" – though some sources give Oleson, later Oleson Kvalen as Qualen's earlier surnames. Rhys Williams (31 December 1897 – 28 May 1969) was a Welsh character actor. He appeared in 78 films over a span of 30 years and later appeared on American television series. Clearwater, Texas
Clearwater is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Texas, United States. History The community was named for the clear waters in the nearby Cypress Creek. White settlers arrived in the 1860s, but the community itself did not appear until the next decade. There was a sawmill, a gin, a store, and a church in the community in the 1930s. Its population was 25 in 1933, which grew to 50 in 1945. The community had a church, a cemetery, and several scattered homes in 1985. Geography Clearwater is located on Farm to Market Road 1448, south of Mount Vernon in southern Franklin County.
