"The Shift" is a song by American alternative metal band 10 Years. It was their first single off of their ninth studio album, '' Violent Allies''. It peaked on the ''Billboard'' Mainstream Rock Songs chart at 25 in 2020. Background and recording The song was recorded in late 2019 for the band's upcoming untitled ninth studio album due out in 2020. The song was recorded with music producer Howard Benson, who the band previously worked with on their album '' Feeding the Wolves''. The song was the product of very challenging recording sessions with Benson, who rejected 75% of the material previously written prior to entering the studio, leaving the band to write and record new material in the studio on the spot with Benson. A lyric video was released at the same time as the single's May 15, 2020 release. As of October 2020, the single had peaked at number 25 on the ''Billboard'' Mainstream Rock. 10 Years is an American alternative metal band formed in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999. The band consists of lead vocalist Jesse Hasek, lead guitarist Brian Vodinh, rhythm guitarist Matt Wantland, bassist Chad Grennor, and drummer Luke Narey. The group has gone through multiple line-up changes since their inception, with Vodinh and Wantland being the only remaining founding members. To date, they have released ten studio albums, their most recent being ''Descontructed'' in 2022. Feeding the Wolves is the fifth studio album by the American alternative metal band 10 Years, and their third major label release. The album debuted at No. 17 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, with 19,000 units sold. Background The album was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge. The band has mentioned this will be their heaviest material to date and "very similar to some of their early songs." The 10-track album was the Tennessee band's first since founding guitarist Matt Wantland left the group in 2009. Throughout the first half of 2010, the band went back and forth between putting on live shows and working on the album in the studio. During this time, they debuted a few new songs live, including "Dead in the Water", "Now is the Time", and the new album's first single " Shoot It Out".
