''The Secret Life of the Waterboys 81–85'' is an album of outtakes, live tracks and demos by the Waterboys, released by Chrysalis on 24 October 1994. The tracks on the album were picked by Mike Scott himself. He told ''Melody Maker'' in 1994, "Working on the selection with Chrysalis has helped me come to terms with who I was in those days, to learn to accept and appreciate this young man, singing his heart out. I'm reminded how much I love the musicians who passed in and out of the band." Critical reception Upon its release, John Mulvey of ''NME'' praised ''The Secret Life of the Waterboys 81–85'' as an "impeccable trainspotter's collection" which "dips into the sizeable Waterboys' archive for a relentlessly stirring journey round the fringes of their first three albums". The Waterboys
The Waterboys are a folk rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1983 by Scottish musician Mike Scott. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Mike Scott has remained as the only constant member throughout the band's career. They have explored a number of different styles, but their music is mainly a mix of folk music with rock and roll. They dissolved in 1993 when Scott departed to pursue a solo career. The group reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and to tour worldwide. Karl Wallinger
Karl Edmond De Vere Wallinger (born 19 October 1957, Prestatyn, Wales) is a Welsh musician, songwriter and record producer. He is best known for leading the band World Party and for his mid-1980s stint in the Waterboys. He also wrote and originally released the song " She's the One", which was later covered by Robbie Williams and became a hit single. Wallinger is a multi-instrumentalist, enabling him to demo and record the bulk of World Party material as a one-man band. Although he is right-handed, he plays a right-handed guitar upside-down and left-handed. Early life and early musical work Wallinger was born in Prestatyn, Wales, and spent his early childhood there, but was educated at Charterhouse (a public school in Surrey). Don't Bang The Drum
"Don't Bang the Drum" is a song from Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys, released as the opening track on their third studio album ''This Is the Sea''. It was written by Mike Scott and Karl Wallinger, and produced by Scott. The song was released as a single in Germany and was also issued as a 12" promotional vinyl in the United States. Background "Don't Bang the Drum" originated as a set of lyrics Scott had written. Although he usually did this songwriting alone, Scott decided to hand over some lyrics to band members Anthony Thistlethwaite and Karl Wallinger as an experiment. Wallinger was given the lyrics for "Don't Bang the Drum" and came up with the music for it. Scott recalled in 2011: "He did a sassy, 60s-ish, Detroit rhythm, ithgreat melodies and good chords. Anthony Thistlethwaite
Anthony "Anto" Thistlethwaite (born 31 August 1955, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, England) is a British multi-instrumentalist best known as a founding member (with guitarist Mike Scott) of the folk rock group, The Waterboys and later as a long-standing member of Irish rock band The Saw Doctors. Career After a year busking in Paris, playing tenor saxophone around the streets of the Latin Quarter, in 1980 Thistlethwaite moved to London and in 1981 he played saxophone on Robyn Hitchcock's ''Groovy Decay'' album as well as Nikki Sudden's ''Waiting on Egypt''. Mike Scott heard the saxophone solo on Nikki's "Johnny Smiled Slowly" and invited Thistlethwaite to come and play with his fledgling band "The Red and The Black". Their first record together "A Girl Called Johnny" was to be released as The Waterboys' first single in March 1983 and featured Thistlethwaite on tenor sax. Michael Scott (born 14 December 1958) is a Scottish singer, songwriter and musician. He is the founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of rock band The Waterboys. He has also produced two solo albums, ''Bring 'em All In'' and ''Still Burning''. Big Country are a Scottish rock band formed in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1981. The height of the band's popularity was in the early to mid 1980s, although it has retained a cult following for many years since. ''Select'' was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s. It was known for covering indie rock, but featured a wide array of music. Launched in July 1990, its first cover star was Prince. After EMAP Metro bought ''Select'', they revamped its image, and it became known for its coverage of Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Its 1993 "Yanks Go Home" edition, featuring The Auteurs, Denim, Saint Etienne, Pulp and Suede's Brett Anderson on the cover in front of a Union Flag, was an important impetus in defining the movement's opposition to American genres such as grunge. Later, John Harris stepped down as editor, and was replaced by former ''Mixmag'' editor Alexis Petridis.
