The Salters School Of Chemistry
The Salters School of Chemistry is a branch of Christ's Hospital that teaches mainly chemistry to all Christ's Hospital pupils. It was founded by Samuel Porter and the Worshipful Company of Salters (one of the livery company that sponsors children to study at CH) in 1993. Worshipful Company Of Salters
The Worshipful Company of Salters is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London, 9th in order of precedence. The Company originated as the Guild of Corpus Christi, which was granted a Royal Charter of incorporation in 1394. Further Charters granted the Company the authority to set standards and regulations regarding the products of its members. Originally, the Salters' Company included individuals whose trades involved the usage of salts and the preparation of chemical mixtures for use in food. As with many other livery companies, the Salters' Company has lost its direct connection to its original trade. Currently, however, the company supports the chemical industry and supports education in chemistry, for example by awarding scholarships to chemistry students. Christ's Hospital
Christ's Hospital is a public school (English independent boarding school for pupils aged 11–18) with a royal charter located to the south of Horsham in West Sussex. The school was founded in 1552 and received its first royal charter in 1553. Since its establishment, Christ's Hospital has been a charity school, with a core aim to offer children from humble backgrounds the chance of a better education. Charitable foundation Christ's Hospital is unusual among British independent schools in that the majority of the students receive bursaries. Royal Mathematical School
Royal Mathematical School is a branch of Christ's Hospital, founded by Charles II. It is currently Christ's Hospital's Maths Department. History It was established so that potential sailors could learn navigation and mathematicians could train at the school. Samuel Pepys was closely involved in the foundation, in 1673, with Jonas Moore. The School was integrated into Christ's Hospital, with boys who were pupils being selected aged 11 or 12 and prepared for a career in the Royal Navy. There was a short-lived new mathematical school within Christ's Hospital, backed by Isaac Newton, and taught by Humphry Ditton; it ran from 1706 to 1715, when Ditton died, but then was closed down. James Hodgson was master of the Royal Mathematical School from 1709 to 1755, with John Robertson as assistant towards the end of his life. Other masters included James Dodson and William Wales.
