The Rooster Comb
The Rooster Comb is a multi-peak mountain located in the Alaska Range, in Denali National Park and Preserve, in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated 4,000 feet above the Ruth Glacier along the southwest margin of the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, southeast of Denali, east of Mount Huntington, and southeast of Mount Kudlich. The mountain's descriptive name was submitted by Bradford Washburn in 1957 based on an original description by Claude Ewing Rusk during his 1910 Mazama Expedition: ''"To our west was a remarkable mountain, rising abruptly from the snowfields to a height of at least 10,000 feet, its tip a succession of corniced spires, like a great rooster comb."'' Claude Ewing Rusk
Claude Ewing Rusk (November 20, 1871 – February 3, 1931), also known as C. E. Rusk, was an American mountaineer, lawyer, and author from Washington who pioneered routes up Mount Adams, Mount Baker, and Glacier Peak. He also ascended many other peaks in Washington, Oregon, and California. Personal life Early life Rusk was born on November 20, 1871, in Knox County, Illinois to James A. and Josie A. Rusk. His family emigrated from Illinois to Washington Territory in the fall of 1874. They settled in eastern Klickitat County in an area known as Wood Gulch. In 1878, Rusk's only sibling, Leah, was born. A snow cornice or simply cornice (from the Italian cornice meaning "ledge") is an overhanging edge of snow on a ridge or the crest of a mountain and along the sides of gullies. Formation A snow cornice forms by wind blowing snow over sharp terrain breaks (e.g. the crest of the mountain) where it attaches and builds out horizontally. Henry Bradford Washburn Jr. (June 7, 1910 – January 10, 2007) was an American explorer, mountaineer, photographer, and cartographer.
