The Rain Of Sorrow
''The Rain of Sorrow'' is a 1965 Taiwanese film directed by Wang Yin, based on Chiung Yao's 1964 novel '' Fire and Rain''. The film stars Wang Yin himself, as well as 21-year-old Gua Ah-leh in her acting debut. Wang Yin handpicked Gua Ah-leh, a recent graduate of National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), from over a thousand candidates for the lead role. The film's other investors wanted a "sexier" bankable actress, but Wang wouldn't budge. Eventually Wang had to finance the film all by himself after other investors quit the project, but his selection proved brilliant. Gua Ah-leh won Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress for this film, and would go on to become one of the greatest actresses in the cinema of Taiwan. Fire And Rain (novel)
''Fire and Rain'' is a 1964 Taiwanese novel by romance novelist Chiung Yao. One of her best-known works, it has been adapted multiple times into film and TV dramas. Plot The story follows a young girl Lu Yi-ping whose father Lu Chen-hua had for years been a warlord in Northeast China, where he forcibly married many girls, before fleeing the 1949 Chinese Communist Revolution for Taiwan (presumably after joining the National Revolutionary Army to fight the communists as many minor warlords did during the Chinese Civil War). In Taipei, Lu Yi-ping and her mother live in utter poverty, and she swears revenge on her father's household, who live in luxury. After realizing her half-sister Lu Ru-ping fancies reporter Ho Shu-huan, she actively seeks his love as part of her scheme. Chiung Yao or Qiong Yao (; born 20 April 1938) is the pen name of Chen Che, a Taiwanese writer and producer who is often regarded as the most popular romance novelist in the Chinese-speaking world. Her novels have been adapted into more than 100 films and TV dramas. Early life Chen Che and her twin brother were born in 1938 during the Second Sino-Japanese War in Chengdu, Sichuan, to parents who had fled Beijing which had fallen to Japanese troops in 1937.
