The Queen And Concubine
''The Queen and Concubine'' is a Caroline era stage play, a tragicomedy written by Richard Brome and first published in 1659. It has sometimes been called Brome's best tragicomedy. Publication and date The play was first printed when it was included in the 1659 Brome collection ''Five New Plays'', issued by the booksellers Andrew Crooke and Henry Brome (no relation to the dramatist). Its date of authorship and earliest stage production is uncertain; scholars have generally placed it c. 1635 or in the 1635–40 period. Genre Of Brome's sixteen surviving plays (including ''The Late Lancashire Witches'', his collaboration with Thomas Heywood), the vast majority are comedies; only three are tragicomedies. Dumbshow, also dumb show or dumb-show, is defined by the ''Oxford Dictionary of English'' as "gestures used to convey a meaning or message without speech; mime." In the theatre the word refers to a piece of dramatic mime in general, or more particularly a piece of action given in mime within a play "to summarise, supplement, or comment on the main action". In the ''Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance'', Michael Dobson writes that the dumbshow was originally "an allegorical survival from the morality play". The Winter's Tale
''The Winter's Tale'' is a play by William Shakespeare originally published in the First Folio of 1623. Although it was grouped among the comedies, many modern editors have relabelled the play as one of Shakespeare's late romances. ''Pandosto: The Triumph of Time'' is a prose romance written by the English author Robert Greene, first published in 1588. A later edition of 1607 was re-titled ''Dorastus and Fawnia''. Popular during the time of William Shakespeare, the work's plot was an inspiration for that of Shakespeare's play ''The Winter's Tale''. Greene, in turn, may have based the work on ''The Clerk's Tale'', one of '' The Canterbury Tales'' of Chaucer. Robert Greene (1558–1592) was an English author popular in his day, and now best known for a posthumous pamphlet attributed to him, '' Greene's Groats-Worth of Witte, bought with a million of Repentance'', widely believed to contain an attack on William Shakespeare. Robert Greene was a popular Elizabethan dramatist and pamphleteer known for his negative critiques of his colleagues. He is said to have been born in Norwich. William Beeston
William Beeston (1606? – 1682) was an English actor and theatre manager, the son and successor to the more famous Christopher Beeston. Early phase William was brought up in the theatrical world of his father; he became an actor, and also his father's assistant in managing the Cockpit and Red Bull theatres and their associated companies of actors, including the company of younger players colloquially known as Beeston's Boys.
