It concerns an expatriate Australian actor who returns to Australia from England to star in a film adaptation of a successful Australian novel. ''The Piccadilly Bushman'' was originally produced as a commercial tour of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide by J.C. Williamson's, premiering at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre on 12 September 1959. Melbourne's Playbox Theatre Company revived it at the CUB Malthouse in 1998. Ray Lawler
Raymond Evenor Lawler (born 23 May 1921) is an Australian actor, dramatist, and theatre producer and director. His most notable play was his tenth, '' Summer of the Seventeenth Doll'' (1953), which had its premiere in Melbourne in 1955. The play changed the direction of Australian drama. The story of ''The Doll'' is preceded by ''Kid Stakes'', set in 1937, when the characters of ''The Doll'' are young adults, and then ''Other Times'', which is set in 1945 and includes most of the same characters. Early life Lawler was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray on 23 May 1921, second of eight children of a council worker. He left school at 13 to work in a factory and attended evening acting classes. He wrote his first play at 19, and his play ''Hal's Belles'' had good notices in early 1946. The Comedy Theatre is a 1003-seat theatre in Melbourne's East End Theatre District. It was built in 1928, and was designed in the Spanish style, with a Florentine-style exterior and wrought-iron balconies. Playbox Theatre Company
Playbox Theatre Company is a theatre company for children and young people based in Warwick. Playbox provide training for children and young people aged 3-25 in various different areas, including theatre training, musical theatre, circus, voice and Shakespeare. Based at their purpose built theatre in Warwick, The Dream Factory, Playbox also run training sessions at various outlying centres including Leamington, Stratford-upon-Avon, Kenilworth, Solihull and Banbury. AusStage: The Australian Live Performance Database is an online database which records information about live performances in Australia, providing records of productions from the first recorded performance in Australia (1789, by convicts) up until the present day. The only repository of Australian performing arts in the world, it is managed by a consortium of universities, government agencies, industry organisations and arts institutions, and mostly funded by the Australian Research Council.
