The Overcoat (1952 Film)
''The Overcoat'' ( it, Il Cappotto) is a 1952 Italian fantasy-drama film directed by Alberto Lattuada. It stars Renato Rascel and is a modern-day version, set in Italy, of the same-named 1842 short tale by Nikolai Gogol. The director's sister, Bianca Lattuada, was one of the production managers and his father, Felice Lattuada, composed the music. It was shot at the Farnesina Studios of Titanus in Rome with sets designed by the art director Gianni Polidori. Location shooting took place in Pavia in Lombardy. Plot The Northern Italian town of Pavia in the 1930s. Carmine De Carmine, a clerk employed in the town hall, lives very modestly in rented room. He is devoted to his work, but is continually ignored or demeaned by the town's general secretary as well as by the mayor, an ambitious and corrupt politician, who has both a wife and a mistress. Alberto Lattuada
Alberto Lattuada (; 13 November 1914 – 3 July 2005) was an Italian film director. Career Lattuada was born in Vaprio d'Adda, the son of composer Felice Lattuada. He was initially interested in literature, becoming, while still a student, a member of the editorial staff of the antifascist fortnightly ''Camminare...'' (1932) and part of the artists' group ''Corrente di Vita'' (1938). Before entering the film industry, Lattuada's father made him complete his studies as an architect even though he recognized his desire to make movies. He began his film career as a screenwriter and assistant director on Mario Soldati's '' Piccolo mondo antico'' ("Old-Fashioned World", 1940). Silvio Bagolini
Silvio Bagolini (4 August 1914 – 26 September 1976) was an Italian film actor. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1936 and 1973. Life and career Born in Bologna, Bagolini studied architecture at the Bologna University, without graduating. He made his acting debut with a leading role in a 1934 experimental amateur film, ''Verde nei prati''. Moved to Rome, he enrolled at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Olinto Cristina (5 February 1888 – 17 June 1962) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Biography Born in Florence to actors Raffaello Cristina and Cesira Sabatini, Cristina began acting on stage as a child. His sisters Ines Cristina Zacconi, Jone Frigerio and Ada Cristina Almirante were also actresses. His sister Ines was the mother of actress Margherita Bagni and the grandmother of actress Nora Ricci, she married secondly Ermete Zacconi. Giulio Calì
Giulio Calì (26 March 1895 – 20 January 1967) was an Italian film actor. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1927 and 1966. Life and career Born in Rome, Calì started his career on stage, being mainly active in Roman dialect theater and in avanspettacolo. He made his film debut in 1927, in Umberto Paradisi's ''Un balilla del '48'', but his career ultimately started after the Second World War, when he was cast in a good number of films of different genres and quality, even if usually playing very minor roles. Calì is probably best known for his association with director Alberto Lattuada, who gave him his first significant roles, namely Smarazzacucco in ''The Mill on the Po'' (1949) and the sailor in ''The Overcoat'' (1952).
