The New Dance Show
''The New Dance Show'' is a television series in Detroit, Michigan, which ran on WGPR-TV 62 (now a CBS affiliate known as WWJ-TV) and W68CH 68 (now WHPS-CD 15). Hosted by R.J. Watkins, ''The New Dance Show'' was a local version of ''Soul Train'' and featured regular dancers, including a man who dressed like a Gypsy and who wore a cape, and a woman who dressed as a boxer. The show featured music from several influential Detroit techno artists. ''The New Dance Show'' was developed as a spin-off of ''The Scene'', which ran from October 1975 to December 1987. ''The New Dance Show'' debuted in 1988, the first show being recorded at Reggie's Moulin Rouge in Detroit. Production later moved to Highland Park in 1994 after R.J. WHPS-CD, virtual and UHF digital channel 15, is a low-powered Class A independent television station serving Detroit, Michigan, United States that is licensed to Highland Park. The station is owned by HME Equity Fund II. The station broadcasts from its studios at the corner of Victor and Brush Streets (near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and the Davison Freeway) in Highland Park, with its transmitter located near Burt Road and Capitol Avenue in the Weatherby section of Detroit, shared with radio stations WMUZ-FM and WCHB. WHPS-CD is available nationwide through online streaming and on Roku and Xfinity channel 91 in Highland Park, Hamtramck, and most of Detroit (except for the southern portion of the Detroit neighborhood of Boynton). WHPR-FM (88.1 FM) is an Urban Oldies and Talk radio station based in Highland Park, Michigan, owned and operated by R. J.'s Late Night Entertainment Corporation. History The station was founded May 21, 1954 by the Highland Park School District; the studio and transmitter were located at Highland Park High School, with the facilities operated by high school students to provide educational radio broadcasting to the community. When the high school relocated in 1977, the Wayne County Community College District took over the facility as well as the HPHS buildings. On December 20, 1994, the college closed down the campus, and the station was sold to R.J. Watkins, owner of local low-powered station W33BY (then on channel 68 as W68CH). Soul Train
''Soul Train'' is an American musical variety television show. It aired in syndication from October 2, 1971, to March 25, 2006. Across its 35-year history the show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, and hip hop artists. The series was created by Don Cornelius, who also served as its first host and executive producer. Production was suspended following the 2005–2006 season, with a rerun package under the moniker ''The Best of Soul Train'' airing for two years subsequently. As a nod to ''Soul Train''s longevity, the show's opening sequence during later seasons contained a claim that it was the "longest-running first-run, nationally syndicated program in American television history", with over 1,100 episodes produced from the show's debut through the 2005–2006 season. WWJ-TV (channel 62) is a television station in Detroit, Michigan, United States, owned and operated by the CBS television network. Under common ownership with CW affiliate WKBD-TV under the network's CBS News and Stations group, both stations share studios on Eleven Mile Road in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, while WWJ-TV's transmitter is located in Oak Park. Founded as WGPR-TV in 1975 by Dr. William V. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. Highland Park, Michigan
Highland Park is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,977 at the 2020 census. Along with its neighbor of Hamtramck, Highland Park is an enclave city surrounded by the city of Detroit. History The area that was to become Highland Park began as a small farming community, on a large ridge at what is now Woodward Avenue and Highland, north of Detroit.
