The Mystery Man (film)
''The Mystery Man'' is a 1935 American film directed by Ray McCarey. Plot summary A Chicago newspaper man, Larry Doyle, finds himself in St. Louis after a night of drunken revelry. Low on money, he sees a young woman, Anne Olgivie, at a coffee counter. She hasn't got enough money to cover her bill, so he surreptitiously pays for her. Later, after sending a telegram to his boss asking for funds, Larry sees Anne again, trying to send a wire to her mother for money to come home. Unable to pay for the message, she leaves, and Larry recovers her note. Exiting to the street, he thinks he sees Anne throw herself in front of a car, so he grabs her, making it look as if she embraces him wildly. He admits to her that he is broke and that he knows she is, as well. They take a suite in a Hotel, pretending to be on their honeymoon and try to raise some money. Ray McCarey
Raymond Benedict McCarey (September 6, 1904 – December 1, 1948) was an American film director, brother of director Leo McCarey. Biography McCarey began working at Hal Roach Studios, where he did work on short films with Our Gang and Laurel and Hardy. He also worked with Roscoe Arbuckle, the Three Stooges, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong and Dorothy Dandridge among many others. Most of his feature film work consisted of "B" pictures and low-budget films. He directed 62 films between 1930 and 1948. He was the younger brother of director Leo McCarey and was occasionally billed as Raymond McCarey but usually as Ray McCarey. On December 2, 1948, McCarey was found dead kneeling beside his bed. According to the San Bernardino County Sun, two empty prescription bottles were found by his bed. His brother Leo McCarey said he had been in ill health for several months. Sam Lufkin
Samuel "Sam" William Lufkin (May 8, 1891 – February 19, 1952) was an American actor who usually appeared in small or bit roles in short comedy films. Career Born in Utah, Lufkin spent most of his career at the Hal Roach Studios where he made over 60 films. In over half of these, he appeared alongside Laurel and Hardy, again mostly in small parts, but occasionally in more substantial roles, such as an irascible cop (''The Music Box''), or an irate motorist ('' Two Tars''). After Laurel and Hardy left Roach in 1940, the grim-faced Lufkin mostly appeared in further bit roles in Hollywood feature films before his death of uremia in 1952. Sam Flint (born Samuel A. Ethridge; October 19, 1882 – October 17, 1980) was an American actor. Flint appeared in more than 230 films, often as a "judge, lawyer, military officer, senator, sheriff, chief of police, or doctor." Flint was married to actress Ella Ethridge, whom he met after she watched him in a play in Galveston, Texas.
