The Messthetics (album)
''The Messthetics'' is the debut album by the band of the same name, featuring bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty of Fugazi along with guitarist Anthony Pirog, best known for his association with the band Skysaw and the duo Janel & Anthony. Recorded by Canty at his practice space in Washington, D.C. during 2017, it was released in 2018 by Dischord Records. The album marked the first time Canty and Lally had recorded together since Fugazi's 2001 release ''The Argument''. Regarding the duo's decision to team up with Pirog, Canty stated that he was attracted to the fact that Pirog "was playing really wildly different things in every situation," and noted that the guitarist's introduction of fast, odd-metered material felt "like catching baseballs in a batting cage." The Messthetics
The Messthetics is an instrumental trio formed by former Fugazi members bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty with guitarist Anthony Pirog. Their music has been described as "jazz punk jam." History Lally had been living in Rome and upon returning to Washington D.C. he hooked back up with Canty and played him some of his solo work. Canty suggested Pirog join them as he had previously been impressed by him. When the three started jamming they clicked as a band and Pirog invited the other two to be his rhythm section for a project with John Zorn's Tzadik Records. They didn't end up recording for Tzadik as at their first show Ian MacKaye was impressed enough to offer them a spot on Dischord Records. Anthropocosmic Nest
''Anthropocosmic Nest'' is the second album by The Messthetics. Unlike their debut album, which was recorded after having only been together for a short while, this album was recorded after a great deal of touring. Guitarist Anthony Pirog estimates the band played about 200 gigs and therefore had a chance to perform the songs live for a while before recording them. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Mark Deming called the album "a must for anyone with a taste for music that's smart, challenging, and exciting," and wrote: "''Anthropocosmic Nest'' pushes the trio's boundaries on all sides... The three musicians... avecreated a greater shared language and the conversation is richer, more potent, and more deeply rewarding" in comparison with their debut album. Joe Lally
Joseph Francis Lally (born December 3, 1963) is an American bassist, vocalist and record label owner, best known for his work with Fugazi. Biography Lally was born in Silver Spring, Maryland. Fugazi Joe Lally formed Fugazi with Ian MacKaye in 1987. He remained as the group's bassist until their "indefinite hiatus" in 2003. Tolotta records Lally founded Tolotta Records (distributed through Dischord Records), which was active from 1994 until 2001, putting out notable releases by such artists as Dead Meadow, Spirit Caravan, Stinking Lizaveta & Orthrelm. Side projects In early 2002, Lally joined ex-Frodus members Shelby Cinca and Jason Hamacher on a project originally called The Black Sea, which would change its name to Decahedron and release an EP and an album before Lally left the band. Brendan John Canty (born March 9, 1966, in Teaneck, New Jersey) is an American musician, composer, producer and film maker, best known as the drummer for the band Fugazi. Skysaw was an American alternative rock band featuring former The Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin along with multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/songwriter Mike Reina and guitarist Anthony Pirog.
